This is why I don't like buying stuff online...

I had to purchase my daughters school books online last week. The website where I purchased them asked for either credit card information or bank information. Unfortunately, I don't have room on my credit card. I happened to have enough money in my bank account so I opted for the direct withdrawal option. I have them my account information. The books cost $309.00 and change. Guess what. They charged my bank account FOUR TIMES!! I have had to send them an e-mail telling them of the situation and requesting that they correct it. I hope it doesn't take to long, because I gotta pay my bills! Do you purchase things online? Do you feel safe doing it? Have you ever had a similar problem?

Thats very careless of them.I dont believe in buying online its not safe giving your bank account and credit card details.I only purchase if there is a option like cash on delivery where we have to pay them only after we get the product at our door step.i have bought a MP# player in that way.

Wow! I've never had any problems like that, but I still don't really like to buy things online. I guess I just don't trust that the product will be what I want, more than a problem with the money. I also don't see why you'd have to purchase your daughter's school books at all, let alone online. So many parents still don't have access or credit cards... Hope they get your money straightened out PDQ!

No I dont order on line for this reason . People take advamtage of the info. and maybe good you did bank you learned about it faster than a credit card that could of took a month and then where would ya be. I would also call bank and tell them that only one of the cahrges was to come out of my account or cancel the whole thing and go to a store. Why arent the school selling the books like they used to ? Good luck!

I'm sorry but you have no clue what you are talking about! With a credit card, when you dispute an item they side with you until the matter is concluded! With a bank account in can take longer.

You should inform your bank of this situation pronto. It is most likely an innocent mistake and the store may correct it. However, there are fraudsters in any operation. Your bank may assist you in correcting this issue more quickly. You also could do with some identity theft protection. Bank of America provides mine. http://www.bankofamerica.com/pap/

I had one situation not too long ago when I was charged twice. I have had a PayPal account for over 5 years and I trust it 100%. I am very careful to check and avoid phishing scams concerning PayPal so I stay safe. PayPal has recently developed a free widget that generates a virtual card number for each transaction. The money comes out of your PayPal account and your linked checking. I don't even have a credit card, only debit, but I get a new virtual card number each time -- a one time only number. THere is a unique icon you choose and use to make sure you're actually using the PayPal virtual card number generator. With this new method you can't be charged more than once. Each transaction needs it's own new number. This is the way I'm going from now on and I suggest you do, too! Just learn to read headers to prevent being scammed and get yourself going on PayPal.

I'm so glad that wasn't me!!! It would have caused us to be overdrawn and we wouldn't be able to feed our family!! That is just horrible that they did that. They should give you a discount or a credit for inconveniencing you like that!! What on earth could make them mess up like that? I am a big fan of shopping online but that would really make me think twice about ever doing it again! We had a phone company mess up like that with our account but it was done over the phone. It messed up our bank account really bad too- causing us to overdraw significantly. We complained and they didn't want to take the blame for it. I demanded that they do something to fix it because we lost money on the insufficient funds fee. After freaking out on them they finally took care of it but not very willingly!

I must say that until I got smart and used a debit card, I simply wouldn't shop online. My method is to put the exact amount of any purchase that I intend to make on my debit card, and make the purchase immediately. Debit cards can be loaded by many methods, so I don't have to bother using my bank info... a money order will do... I never use the debit card from my bank... there are many free debit cards available online. It's a chore, but it's well worth it, to keep your credit card and bank info as secure as possible, Debit cards, used wisely, can allow you to have the power to shop online, and get the great discounts and conveniences that it offers, and keep your cash safe, too. Here's some Personal Security Tips: http://security.tipcentral.net/ Thanks for this great discussion! :)

I've purchased things online, but only because I had to. I've never had a similar problem, although wow, that's quite the problem. I can't imagine how I'd handle it if it happened to me - I have very little room in my budget for error, much less an error of that size.

I never buy anything online. I just dont feel comfortable doing that. Because there are so scams happening out there. Why risk it? The only thing I ever bought online was airline ticketts and that was years ago.

You may call me paranoid but I don't give away my bank account information to anyone online - and I don't keep a credit card. It is best to inspect what you buy personally and pay cash even in this electronic age. I hope you get back your money quickly.

I do purchase online but have done so only through gift cards. Although it is not possible to use the gift cards to the end but still i am happy that i dont have to submit my bank details for buying anything online. I think this is the basic advantage of a gift card.

Oh my gosh! What a big mess! We've never had a problem like that before, and if we did, we would be in BIG trouble. We live paycheck to paycheck, most times, and that would cause al kinds of problems. Hope it is resolved quickly for you!

I do purchase online, but generally use a credit card just for that purpose, and then the idea is to pay the credit card (online) right away from the money in the bank, I have a few bank accounts and generally like to use just one for such purposes that way if they are crooked it will be easier to catch and to stop before too many incidents occur.

In addition to emailing the company that charged you, I would also file an unauthorized charge with your bank. That way they won't pay it or if its already paid, they will refund the money back to your account as well as any fees incured. I do a lot of shopping online (more than I used to do) and thankfully I haven't had a problem like that. I pay electric and phone as well as credit card bills and do shopping online. Good luck and hope you get the problem solved.

In fact this has been the second complains with purchasing things online. i don't know why the bank doesn't even contact their customer to know the correct amount to be paid out to the sales online? and also make the payment? it means since those people have your a/c information, they can withdraw money from one's a/c anytime they wish. the reason why fear buying things online.

I have done a lot of online shopping so far and fortunately I have never faced any problems like the one you have faced. I believe the online security is much improved nowadays than the earlier days. Also, even if some mistakes do occur, most of the shop owners are willing to correct, so that they get a good reputation and more customers. Hope you get your money back.
