Insurance

I was sitting here thinking about all the different types of insurance we are expected to have. The insurance companies have to be among the wealthiest people in the world. There's life insurance, health insurance homeowner's or renter's insurance, fire insurance, flood insurance, burial insurance, driver's insurance. The list goes on and on. A person could easily go broke just keeping up all these insurances. How many do you have? I only have 3, but I do know people who have them all.

It depends on what line of insurance you are talking about and the market in which the insurance company operates, some markets are strictly regulated and it's very difficult for the insurance company to make a profit on lines like auto insurance. For instance, I know that auto insurance companies in my state are lucky to make one penny of profit from every $1 of premium, the rest goes in overhead and payments. Their money actually comes more from investments than premiums collected but not paid out. It's hard to pay for insurance, but it isn't always because the insurance company is gouging, sometimes the market just doesn't allow for better and more competitive pricing.

I'm sorry if you got the wrong idea, Rollo, but I actually was not accusing the insurance companies of anything. Rather I was just pointing out that many people(myself included), pay out so much in insurance on a monthly basis, but may never get any benefit out of it. It's like I told a previous responder, I have had fire insurance for many years and I don't even want to think of how much I've paid into it, but I have never had the need to file a claim-and may not ever. I just consider this a waste of my money.

It's all about risk and chance, isn't it? You pay for insurance because you can't afford to take the risk that something will happen that you won't be able to cover monetarily. The insurance companies hope it doesn't happen as much as you do. I agree that it feels like money out the window, but the best insurance policy is one you never have to use.

Excellent point. This is insurance for everything. You need an extra part time job just to pay for basics. Add up all the money you have spent on insurance that you have never used. It is mind boggling.

So true, sigma. Another responder said they don't make any money. That's ridiculous! How else could they stay in business? I had the occasion that I had to cash one in for the money because I needed it badly. I had paid perhaps a couple thousand dollars into this insurance, and the amount they paid me out did not even come to a hundred dollars.

Insurance companies are very rich, but they are not even close to Christian Churches. Insurance companies do have payouts, (like Katrina) but the church has Very few. In fact they are not above allowing some of their parishioners to starve for lack of food. And the church insists on donations every sunday and from everyone. This has been going on for 2000 yrs. Much longer than insurance has been around. However with the publicity surrounding child molestations the church has been forced into civil settlements anmmounting to billions of dollars. This has taken some cream off the top, but has not even made a dint in the treasury! There are artifacts stored in the Vatican that are priceless. Some of these are spoils of war going back 2 centuries. I've never liked insurance either, but the church is detested even more!

I can agree with you about the insurance companies despite what others believe. Of course they have money. I have not seen or heard of any going broke. On the subject of the church(I assume you mean Catholic), I have heard many of the things you pointed out. When I attended church it was just a simple little country church made of wood and painted white. We even had a little coal stove for heat during the winter. I can assure you that we didn't have any money. In this age of Super Churches, I do believe that many of them have lots of money and are not looking out for the poor, the sick, or the orphans mentioned in the Bible.

I have life, health, auto, dental, vision, and sometime rental insurance. It is hard to keep up with them all and at times when nothing happens for years, I know I began to think of all the money I put into it and I couldv'e used it for something else. should we be forced to have insurance. I guess it is good though when life's unexpected things happen.

That's what I mean, ranitam. Daily I see on the news where people have gotten burned out of their homes, or lose a loved one, and the community is always ready to jump in and donate all kinds of things to help them out. These people didn't bother to have insurance, yet they came out good in the end.

we have car insurance home insurance and life insurance , only ever claimed on one and that was the car insurance a few years ago , I had sat with my aunt for 2 days as she lay dying and I hit the gate on the way in , It was understandable as I was exhausted but it made me start to cry and that was a good thing xxx

Insurance does have it's place, weemam. I'm glad that you had yours to use. I only meant that I think some people have more than they need. Some older people pay out so much in insurances that they cannot afford to eat properly.

Okay, we have life insurance, health insurance (which includes doctors, hospitals, dental and vision), homeowner's insurance (both fire and windstorm), don't need flood insurance or burial insurance (going to be cremated...LOL), and car insurance. The cost of our fire and windstorm insurance is so high here in Florida that we are seriously considering moving to Georgia to be near my son and his family. Don't even get me started on the cost of property taxes here in Florida...I'll never shut up!

I know, claudia, sometimes it seems as though we just can't win. They have convinced us that we need all of these insurances, so we follow blindly along.

I only have medical and dental insurance. I can't afford any other insurance. I am not driving now so I don't need auto insurance.

It really does add up, naty, and just think of the people who pay all that money into it and never have need to use it.

I have health, car and life insurance. I see insurances as a gamble, but a necessary one in many cases.

What got me thinking about it, Feona, is my fire insurance. Seems like I've had it forever, but I have never made a claim. It all seems like such a waste of money, but I'm afraid to let it go.

Well insurance is what ..a future investment isnt it? oh these companies do come up with so many types but we should sensibly decide on what is best for us rather than investing in every type.i dont think its wise to invest in all of them.well i have only one..

hi sweetie, in our country the some names are different but that doesn't stop them from having horades of them. I know ppl who have almost all. infact my father , being a very systenmatic (sometimes overdoing it)person has coverage for almost all!! However, i have only health insurance and a couple of life insurances and that's all. i invest some in stocks, just for the tax exemption thing. Have a great day.

The only insurance we have is renter's insurance b/c we have a waterbed and a cat. It also covers us for fire, flood or burglery. We don't have health insurance though Hubby has VA...we don't have life insurance and since neither of us drive we don't have car insurance. Hubby's burial is mostly covered by VA. We probably need health and burial for me and life for both of us but that takes extra money that we just don't have for it right now. AT PEACE WITHIN

I do not have many insurances. You are right in saying that insurance companies are increasing in number. But they are doing nothing but good people. There should be awareness for insurance among people. I feel that there is still not enough of awareness among people about insurance. Only 4 to 5 perccent of the world population have really got insurance!
