I would like to have a friendly and thoughtful discussion about what Roman Catholics believe. Anyone interested?

I am Catholic. I am a devout Catholic (one who follows the religion to the letter) I do not go to church regularly. But I might be able to answer some of your questions.

Thank you for your response. Do you have any book recommendations for understanding the Catholic faith?

Try the book, - The Complete Idiot's Guide to Understanding Catholocism. I assure you this book is not making fun of the Catholic Religion. It is very informative and easy to understand. Check amazon.com for it.

I am a Catholic but do not go to Church every week although I follow the teachings of the Catholic faith. My dear late grandmother used to say "you don't have to go to Church to be a good Christian and not all those who do go to Church are practicing Christianity in their every day life".

I disagree with you whatevertrevor as sometimes it is not possible for people to get to Church every week but one can still practice and follow the teachings of the Catholic faith. We have spend some considerable time in very out of the way places (i.e. literally hundreds of miles from a town) where there is no Church nor it there a Priest except for the occassional one who comes through a couple of times a year. I too agree with my darling grandmother because a person can be a follow the teachings of their faith without going to Church. :)

Not going to church is a mortal sin? LMAO Where does the Bible say that?? I think you need to do some more reading.

If you do not attend Mass every week you are not following the fundamental teachings of the Catholic Faith. It is a mortal sin to miss Sunday Mass. What your grandmother said is obvious, but not relevant.
