How long is appropriate to get engaged?

It seems as though a lot of people are only waiting until they've been together 1-2 years before getting engaged, while some wait as long as 8 years. Do you feel that there is an "appropriate" timeline between dating and getting engaged?

I think it really depends upon the relationship. I have been engaged a few times previous to my current relationship, though these were mostly informal engagements (i.e., no ring, and no real definite plans). I'm engaged now, though it was never really a matter of him asking me to marry him. It was just a realization that we both wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. We've been together just over a year now, and I started calling him my fiance about three months ago. We're just waiting until he gets done with school (about 3 years) to get married.

I think when it feels right , every one is different, for the people who wait 8 years I would say don't spoil things leave it as is, getting engaged or married may spoilt thing, people are very lucky if their marriage lasts eight years these days....
