To check your mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone *#06# A 15 digits code will appear on the screen, this number is unique to your handset. write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give this code. then they will able to block your handset so even the thief change the sim card the phone will be totally useless.

you know i lost branded phones lots of times..i knew the serial number because its written on the box of the phone..but its not easy to have it disabled..lots of things to do that can just consume so much time and day..i did it once then i backed out doing it because i had to go to the provider and give them the box and file this and that..its just too much to do it..and knowing what technicians can do now..no matter how much you block it..they can always open the phone to reuse it again..they might be spending for opening it but what time you wasted is still comes to waste because they can still use it.

IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) - The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique 15 or 17 digit code used to identify an individual mobile station to a GSM or UMTS network. The IMEI number facilitates an important function; it easily identifies a mobile phone being used on a GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) network. The IMEI is a useful tool to stop a phone that is stolen from accessing a network and being used. Mobile phone owners that have their phones stolen can contact their mobile network provider and ask them to ban or shut off a phone using its IMEI number. With an IMEI number, the phone can be banned from the network quickly and easily. It is important to note that swapping a SIM card will not stop a phone from being banned. An IMEI device is only used to identify the device and does not usually relate to a specific individual or organization.
i had my summer internship in National Telecommunications Commission years ago and people who have lost their cellphone usually go there to report. the one in charge there usually ask for the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity= 15 digits). every cellphone has a unique IMEI code. this is used to identify your mobile phone not your cellphone number. it is found in the box of your mobile phone and also at the back of your phone where your battery is placed. go on check it if you want. so if ever you forgot the digits to dial to get the code, you can check it at the back of your phone. or if you lost your phone and didn't take note of the code just make sure you still have the box of your cellphone. find the IMEI. it's there. hope this helps.=)

yah, you can have your service provider disable your phone by giving them your IMEI number. When your phone is stolen you must report it to your service provider and also you should already have a written copy of your IMEI number.
