My mom was the worst gift giver - at least what she got me - I used to love the things she got for others! My favourite holidays were when she started taking me shopping for my gifts!HAs this happened to you - what was the worst? My mom once got me a vest of fur - yuck and smelled funny. Another time she got me a seventies style camel brown leather jacket. Both time she said, I saw this and it was so you!The most recent gift wasn't from her. It was a wool polka dot purse with matching change purse. I'm going to try to upload the picture but the past few times I've uploaded then clicked the start discussion button and the picture nevered showed! We can't edit unfortunately so...

Yes, every year for Christmas my dad's girlfriend asks me what size i wear for clothes. I tell her and it never fails, every Christmas I open a box up to find a cute sweater but with the hood two sizes too big, an ugly 70's coat with buttons, and other ridiculous items. It might be one jogging outfit that's cute and you really can't go too wrong with those. I don't understand, she doesn't dress bad herself.

Maybe she thinks you should be wearing larger clothes - or its a hint to gain weight. Well at least you get the cute jogging suit - I can't pull that off - my sister she looks neat in anything she could wear those to a business meeting and still pull it off.

What if you went shopping with her a few times to let her get a feel for your sense of style - and size? Or do you think its purposeful?

Oh yes, far too many to count! One of the "gems," so to speak, was a painted ceramic tea kettle from my mom... which might have been a bit more thoughtful if she hadn't gotten myself and my two sisters the exact same design... :( That same year, I think that my friend observed that I was selling about half of my Christmas presents at the yard sale that we had in April. Candles that smelled awful, stuff that absolutely was not my style, etc. I did get some great gifts that year too, which made it a little bit better, but there were a lot that just made me wonder if the people who bought them knew me at all. :)

Hate is probably too strong a word for it but I've got a gift I would have liked to...return. The first Christmas I spent with my (now) in-laws my (now) husband warned me that they weren't the greatest gift givers. They gave me a Peggy Fleming snow globe. Um, why you ask? Is it because I'm a huge fan? I'm not. I love to skate? Haven't been since i was a kid. I collect snowglobes? Not me. So why did they get it? I have no idea but I gave them a big smile said thank you and that was it. We have it in our basement with other ....things.

Alot of women seemed to give - or perhaps - re-gift - scented candles. Most of them give me a headache. Greenmama, my mother-in-law is asian, and always gives gifts that are too small - really nice stuff actually but she she generally gets my husband things that are large and he's x-large - he's 6'4, more like a samoan than chinese. My mother in law is a tiny asian woman. I guess the clothes she got for me will fit after I start nursing. Right now, I'm kind of doing the Pamela Anderson thing!

Last year for xmas my grandmother gave me 2 pairs of the hugest uglies undies I have ever seen, there is no way that they would fit me they were like tents!! I have never worn them but I have kept them to give people a laugh when they come to visit! On my 30th birthday there were several things that I asked my mum for my birthday but she insisted on buying me a clock to celebrate my 30th which is apparently a big birthday, but I couldnt have cared less now I wouldnt have cared about her buying me a clock except for the fact that I already have 2 in my lounge room and I thought it was a bit pointless but she insisted and now I have to have it showing just in case she comes to visit! I could have thought of many more practical things for her to get me!

That's difficult my mom lives in another state so I don't have to worry. Plus she's gotten much better at gift giving - I've gotten some really NICE gifts from her - although now, usually its the kids who get the gifts since we're all grown.

I got the worst gift in my life when a really good friend ( I thought she was anyway) gave me a shirt 3 sizes smaller than the size I use. It was not something like a genuine mistake. I think she got that shirt because she didn't want to go shopping. It would be better if she never game me anything.

Daelin - that's not very considerate of your friend at all. I wonder what would happen if we all spoke up.

OH ya, I do remember one of such gifts i received recently. It was a crockery set which is out of fashion. I just looked at it and smiled at the person who gave that to me and said "thank you this is a nice one." When later I came home, I grumbled looking at the gift.

Wow I'm totally out of it - I never knew was a fashion to crockery sets. I just go to the kitchen stores and such and buy what I like the best. Isn't it funny how we all say something complimentary - even if it happens year after year with the same person, maybe someone - not me - should speak up for all the people that particular person gives gifts to!

There's one friend I've known for ages, but she's not exactly great in the gift giving department...LOL...she usually buys in bulk all these perfumey cremes and lotions gift sets, and gives them as gifts to people...one problem--they STINK!! The scent of the lotions are horrible. I mean I'm nice about it and will accept the gift but I have to confess then that I try to palm it off to someone else...who probably gives it to someone else, who gives it to someone else...well, you get the picture--hehee

I think its always unwise to give scents as give unless you know for sure it something the person wears. They could be stinky to the person - or like me, give them massive migraines, or even kill someone with a severe allergy. "Wow you really kill em in the gift giving department."

wow well for me my father is the same to your mother. he always give me gifts that he knows that i hate to receive as if he is just giving it for fun and just to make him laugh when he will see my reaction after i open the present. im a male and you know what its kinda weird becoz last christmas he gave me a bracelet with a mark encrypted on it. i love you....da as if that is nice. during my birthday last february he gave me a scrubsuit? what a weird weird gift and i asked him why did you choose such gift? and his excuse is its the first thing that i get to notice when i realize its your birthday and so i bought it at once so that i will not forget. that's what he said. anyway, that's my dad...

That's funny - at least he's honest. Maybe you should suggest he take you out to lunch instead? My mom doesn't do it for fun - that's the problem she truly believes I'll like the gifts. She is very sweet though.

I remember once one of my friends bought me a 2 hamsters and gave my name to one and my husband's name to other. But there were no place that i could keep them because i have cats at home . here is question why would someone buys hamsters knowing that this person have 3 wild cats. So i took the hamsters to my office . My boss didn't like the idea because they are always turning their wheel and making crazy noise.I couldn't decide what to do with these hamsters and decided to give them to a pet shop meanwhile they had 5-6 babies. Does anybody see any hamster baby. They look like mini sausages . So I finally gave all of them to a pet shop. And this present was a big headache for me for a loooong time. :)

One time my moms friend got a really ugly luggage set that was bright pink with neon green polka dots. Well my moms friend forgot that my mom was present when she recieved this gift. Well a couple of weeks ago this friend showed up with this luggage set and guess what? Yep. She gave it to my mom for a gift. It was hilarous. My mom never did tell her that she KNEW she had got that for a gift and didn't like it. lol.

That's hilarious. Re- gifting can be cruel. You know someone - not me - might see that luggage set and adore it! She should sell it on E-bay, might be just what someone is looking for!

What's it made of? You could add it to a shirt, or maybe use it on a small table? Maybe he grabbed it from his house at the very last minute - lol!

I love all gifts! But in saying that I have received a gift or 5 that are not of my liking!! The worst would have to be a scented candle set in citrus fragrance. Thats not so bad, I hear you say to yourself! No... Probably not.... for someone who is NOT allergic to citrus!! The gift came from a sibling and that made it even worse. Apart from the one already mentioned, I would have to say that any gift given out of the thought of obligation would not be the best gift to receive and/or give. If I do not know what to give as a gift, I would ask the person or couple: "What would you like from me/us?" If I am short on money at the time a gift is required, I would buy a card and make an I.O.U certificate. If I do not know the person or couple very well, then I would ask someone who does know them well, for a suggestion! Again if I was short on money (but do not know them well enough to give an I.O.U) I would just give a card. Rather than receive a gift I do not like or want, or appreciate, I would prefer just a card. Unfortunately the giver may not know the gift is not of your liking and in that case, I would just say a polite thank you with a smile :-)

I like cards because they can be thoughtful - and just for you unlike some gifts. A card with a note enclosed is even better!

I hate getting things you asked for like a year ago. That's the worst. So now I just don't tell people what I want. That way they have to get me money or a gift card and I can get what I want.

I generally don't care for the gifts my father & stepmom get us. They give odd gifts...like bear statues to the kids that are 2 years old and they give everyone the same thing. There's no thought behind it. When I buy gifts I put thought into what someone would like. I think the worst gift I've gotten so far...my mom got me some bodywash that ended up being a bonus to the perfume that she got and it was old...I couldn't get it out because it was dried up. I'm sure she didn't know...but....

Perfume is nevr a good gift to me - its giving me a migraine as a present. I agree gifts should be specifically for the person. If you don't have the money write a sweet letter or poem.

I'm not the biggest fan of gifts anyhow. I'd rather get money so I can buy whatever it is that I want for myself. My most hated gifts are those things people get because they feel "obligated" to get you something. So they end up getting you something cliche and stupid. Like for instance, this past christmas my aunt got me this "christmas" set of body wash. It's like 12 scents and they are little and I just don't like to use that kind of stuff in the shower. I mean, especially these lame seasonal scents. I hate the "obligation" of gifts... whether I have to give them or receive them, that's always my most hated.

a gift is a gift right, but one cannot help it but to not like what was given. we have this sister in law who loves to give gifts that are useless and beleive me they are not cheap. in the 25 years i have known her i cannot remember a time that i ever liked what she has given me or i may say even my sisters and nephew and nieces and my son, has the same observation. we are not just being mean but what she gives all of us is just useless. even her 2 boys just doesn't like her taste and they even told her to just give money instead of her getting them presents. well everybody has different taste.
