Do you have any idea what the worlds oldest religion is? That is one that has been continually observed from it's origin until now. What is the worlds oldest deity that is still worshipped today?

I know people that worship Inanna, and she's Sumerian... that's pretty old. I'm really hoping you give us the answer soon, I'm dying to know. =P

OK, here it is. The worlds oldest continuing religion is "The Dreaming" of the Australian Aboriginal culture. It is thought to be 60,000 years old and still going strong. The "Rainbow Serpent" that is a part of their creation myth is the worlds oldest deity that has been worshipped with out interruption.

I think they found idols of Lord Shiva hindu diety in Indus valley civilisation ruins. So that will make him the oldest God worshipped. have a look at this article "There is evidence of fire worship, the emergence of a proto Shiva and the possibility of a priestly class. The Indus people were deeply religious and ritual played a big part in their lives, points out D.P. Sharma, head of the Indus collection, National Museum, Delhi. While Wheeler called a white idol found in Mohenjodaro a "priest king", there is little evidence to show that the Indus people were ruled by them. I still disagree with you that women and child idols were worshipped, I would say fire is one thing man has worshipped for centuries and we still do in all of it forms and in all the religions it still considered sacred.

OK I was going to write Hinduism, ancient religions of far-east Asia (China, Japan etc) and Zoroastrianism, but I read the responses and your answers. After how many responses are you letting the cat out of the bag? The oldest deity...would that be Mother Earth?

well, its still being debated whether its hinduism or zoroastrianism.. both these religions are older than judaism.... but if your talking "ancient" and not organized religion... http://www.afrol.com/articles/23093 thought of being a 70,000 year old religion... lol... and they say the world is 4,000 years..

The one I am talking about is not in the realm of the Archaeologists, it is an ongoing tradition and belief system that makes Hinduism and Zoroastrianism the new kids on the block.

That's a good question! According the Bible, the Jewish religion would be the oldest, because it started from the time the earth was created (Adam and Eve, etc.) I don't know what written history would say is the oldest. Certainly the gods the Egyptians worshiped would be among the oldest, but I don't know that any of those deities are still worshipped today. Do you have the answer to your question?
