who made the rule that a workweek is 40 hours, why can't it be 30?

Does anybody know when people started working 40 hours a week. I know that in earlier times and still sometimes today some people work from sun up to sun down. That would be hard as well, but I was wondering was there a reason people must work 40 hours a week and not something like 30 or even more. Where did 40 come from?

I agree I used to work 36hours a week and I think that was enough, life is way too short to spend the best days of your life working, it is not so bad if you love your work but not everyone does, so what a waste, I often feel for those poor people at night caught up in traffic jams trying to get home from work in winter in the dark just to go home have dinner, a couple of hours with the family just to go to bed get up and do it all over again...there is so much more to life...
