How important is religion as a path to God?

Here's something that I'd posted on some other blog, the blogger was a bit offeneded. Basically, he was saying that People should go to Church more and he claims to be a very patriotic American Here's my take: Does Religion really matter? How you live your life is what matters, I think. Misuse of religious texts is one of the root causes of the wars and the misery. Every religion is but a way to God. Mistinterpretation, fear of, disdain towards or hatred for religions, beliefs other than the one you follow, are they really correct? Religion is such a personal matter that it must be left to each person to choose the path that he/she wants to follow. Though born of Hindu parents, my wife wants to visit a Church once a week, I accompany her and follow the rituals there, and I am personally not very particular about following the rituals of Hinduism, my wife she is very particular about the Hindu rituals too. We'd like to take the best that each religion has to offer and improve our lives. My aim is not to offend, just sharing my thoughts.

Every person follows a different path, I feel to look inside and not to follow any religion in order to find god.

I too think similarly and have started a discussion with many threads, one of them being this topic. It's ponderings on life. Thanks for your response!
