Curious Of Basements

a basement - basement space

Last night I was talking to a friend up North and something struck me as curious. I've lived in Michigan, Texas and Missouri. Most homes in Michigan seem to have basements. Their used for all kinds of purposes from storage, game rooms, bed rooms, you name it. I never saw a house in Texas that had a basement. A small crawl space...about a foot or two high...but no basements. Here in Missouri, I've seen a few houses with basements, a couple with old-fashioned root cellers and several with storm cellers. Basements have always creeped me out (too many horror movies I guess) and I like to have a solid pad of concrete under me but my Dad, who lives in Michigan, has always had a basement. On the other hand, having lived with my Mom in Texas and Missouri, we never had a basement in either place. I'm curious as to why this is. Are basements only possible in certain areas? Do you think basements are a good thing or do you prefer not to have one? Do they have them where you live? AT PEACE WITHIN

Mostly all the houses Ive lived in have had basements. I like basements for storage and a place for my washer and dryer. I do think that in certain places they dont have basements I dont know why. I think basements are great.

Well I think to have or to have not a basement has to do with the ground where you live. I mean, there is certain types of ground in which you can have a basement and certain types which you can not. Like if you live near/on the ocean, probably not a smart idea to have a basement as there is a good chance of flooding. I'd say that maybe texas ground or missouri ground just isn't right for basements...but I'm not in construction so who knows. I've lived in 3 houses two of which had basements. But the basement at the one house wasn't actually fully underground.... so you can have above ground basements too.

I would so love to have one for protection from Tornados, but I live on a darn slab. I think, that yes, location is important as to whether or not one can have a basement. Here in my area it's a swappy ground and a base would be impossible to have out of fear of it collasping or flooding. We do have plan of someday moving and my only need in the new house is a basement. I am sick of worrying about flying away during a bad storm, LOL.

well we live in southern ontario (canada) and its rare here NOT to see a basement!! we use our basement for storage/watching tv/laundry and i have a craft area there as well...(not creepy at all!! - its prolly because you are not used to them...) why do they not have basements down there?

In my experience, homes further to the south don't typically have basements and it has a lot to do with the ground, if there is a lot of moisture and how soft the ground is. This can all put pressure on a structure. My parents had a basement in Tennessee and every time it rained that basement flooded. I remember I could float my plastic boats down there at one time.

WOW...I couldn't imagine a basement like that. My Dad's basement flooded once from a water main but it was only about 2 foot of water. Thanks For Posting!! AT PEACE WITHIN

I would LOVE to have a basement for it would be nice to have a game room down there not to mention a room to get away from everything and have a time out and time alone moment. The reason why Texas doesn't have basements is because the ground is too hard to dig through. Very few people there have basements and the ones that do paid a high price to have it dug out. As for other places I don't know but would imagine it to be for the same reasons or the humidity or some other reason that I haven't heard of.

I wondered if the ground down there might not be too hard for it. Although you do see alot of inground pools. Thank you for posting!! AT PEACE WITHIN

I'm sure they paid a pretty penny for those pools too! Interesting though isn't it? I lived there for 10 years and I asked someone about it and that's what they told me. We were thinking of building a house and having a basement but found it cost way more than we had in mind.

I've lived in a few basement suites, and as a teenager, my parents refinished the basement in our house, and my sister and I had our rooms down there. They were nice rooms, and everything was bright and clean. I guess it depends on whether the basement is finished or not.

I think basements would definitely come in handy if the houses were situated where there are a lot of tornadoes. Then it would be a blessing to have one. But other than that, I can't see a reason to have one. I prefer the attic myself. It just seems less creepy. I think if I were to be in a basement, I would constantly feel as if the house was going to fall on my head. LOL

Now that you mention it, I have never seen a house in Miami, Florida or Puerto Rico with a basement! Could be due to the weather. I don't know. Have a good day.

By the way in California, where I live, I have not seen a house with a basement and I think it is due to earthquakes.

few basements in oklahoma too, which was troublesome considering all the tornadoes. however, oklahoma was close to sea level. missouri the basements do not tend to be true basements but are mostly above ground walk outs, could be all the rock is a hindrance to digging a basement.

I think they're right the further south doesn't seem to have basements , I have one and around this area most houses do. Now when my mom lived in Colorado she didn't have a basement just a little crawlspace. I love having a basement ,the house is fairly new so the basement is good.Plenty of storage and this is where my computer is set up.

My husband insisted on building our house with a basement. We use it mostly for storing his junk (treasures). I Used to keep my washer and dryer down there, but I got my husband to build a laundry room next to the kitchen so I wouldn't have to carry laundry up and down the steps all the time. I'm so glad I don't have to go down to that basement anymore. I thought it was creepy even when the house was brand new. It's dark, damp, and has a huge furnace taking up a large chunk of the space. I also have a few shelves down there where I used to store canned tomatoes from my garden.

I would love to have a basement, some of the homes in my are have basements and some don't, mine does not but I would love to have one for storage and extra living room, like maybe a playroom or bigger computer room. My parents have a basement and use it for storage plus my older brother and his family live there. I was always afraid of my parents basement as a kid, I hated to go down there by myself after dark.

personally, I've never lived in a home with a basement but I know many of people who have. If they are not taken care of, they can be the root of many problems with your home. Flooding, mold, rodents and many other things if it is not cleaned and used regularly. I guess it just depends on the purpose you will use it for. They are great for storms and things, but sometimes they are more trouble than good. It depends how old the house is and how they kept it.

I have a basement. It's kinda weird though. You have to go out my side door,go around the corner of the house the go down the steps. It is great for me.My son is 21.I out a bedroom, kitchen and living room down there. This way I don't have to deal with his friends coming in and out through the house.I guess it all depends on how nuch you fix up your basement.I still don't like going down ther etoo much.I think it is the lack of not having regular size windows.

I've seen houses like that where you have to go outside and around the house to get to the basement. Kind of weird huh? I guess in your case it is a blessing...makes it easier to deal with your son's friends :) Thank you for posting!! AT PEACE WITHIN

We bought our first home a little over a month ago and we do have a basement . I love our basement but it doesn't look like anything you would see in the horror movies . Years ago the people who owned it had it as an appartment so it looks more like another house then it does a basement . It has cubboards where the kitchen used to be and a bathroom and a big walkin closet where the bedroom used to be . We are going to take out the little rooms that are there now as they are in serious need of work and put in a couple of bedrooms , we are going to leave half of the basement as a rec room , which we would like to put in a pool table later on in the future and then I would like to have a scrapbooking room as I have always wanted a place of my own where I can scrapbook without worrying that they little one's are going to get into my stuff and ruin it on me . Growning up the house we lived in had a crawl space instead of a full basement . You could never stand up in it and it was spooky going down into it . I would never want something like this and could never understand why anyone would have wasted the time to put in a crawl space rather then a full basement as you can't even stand in them or store anything in them as they are too cold .

to be honest I don't know a house without a basement here. but houses in my homeland do not have basements, not that I know of. I used to think this is due to the temperature. Houses in cold regions most likely have basements rather than houses in tropical areas. Do you have winter in Texas? If not, then maybe this is why you don't need basements there.

I'm thinking the same thing based on what a previous poster said. Texas does have winters but they are generally pretty mild. Thanks for posting!! AT PEACE WITHIN

Depending upon the amount of water in the soil or the amount of rain basements are not feesable in that area or the basement would always be flooded. I have always lived in CA and only lived in one home with a basement and we used it for storage. We also used it for a play room and I loved to go down there to play, I was only 5 or 6 so what did I know.

LOL When I was young my Aunt had a large playroom in her basement and it was excellent for roller skating, bikes, jumping rope and playing jacks. We spent all kinds of time playing down there. It wasn't till I was older that they started creeping me out. Thank you for posting!! AT PEACE WITHIN

I don't like basements they are so creepy at times. Here on the east coast people inland have basements but people along the shore just have mostly crawl spaces. I guess it has something to do wtih flooding. Personally I would rather not have a basement under me too many spiders, lol.

We have a basement it has concrete on the floor, but it was just finished with a floating floor. Our basement is all done like it would be up stairs. My daughter has her playarea here, bathroom,a bedroom. This is our family room where you can throw all the toys around and make a mess.I do my computing here at my desk. The livingroom upstairs usually stays clean in case someone unexpected comes to visit.Everyone here has basements in their houses, its cooler in the summertime in the basement. There are lots of small rooms to put boxed clothes, paint etc.in.I love my basement. The older houses dont have a finished basement,i think its because of the older people, like the way they had theirs when they were young.
