In 1911 Niagara Falls supposedly froze solid. Do you believe this could happen?

I don't know that much about Niagara Falls, but sure would like to go there someday. Since you say supposedly, did this really happen? Seems like it would have to be really cold for a very long time to freeze them like that. ~Remember to give out +'s when it's deserved & select best responses. It helps us all out :-]

I say supposedly just in case the picture was a fake. Such things have been known to happen. I'll try to load the picture so that you can see what I'm talking about. I can't imagine how cold it would have had to be to cause such a phenomenon, but it seems the people in the picture are a bit underdressed.

I guess my picture didn't come through. If you can tell me what I might be doing wrong, I could try to insert it again. I'm a bit of a computer illiterate.

No I don't see how that could of happened the water force is so hard and fast. Have you ever seen it? I have and it is amazing. Its hard to believe that some people have fallen down the falls and lived to tell about it.

I couldn't imagine what it would look like if it froze solid. that is incredible. It would have had to have been freaking cold to do that.

Yes, it would. Of course, Niagara Falls is in the part of the US that gets all the "lake effect" snow and cold from Lake Erie, so I know it can get pretty nasty there, but this picture was unreal!

Wow that looks cool! I always thought that water moving at that force wouldn't be able to feeze? ButI was never very good at science and stuff lol

Yes I belive it. Being a native of the land of ice and fire, I have seen many frozen waterfalls in my lifetime and there are few things on earth that look so amazing.

I never thought about it happening in colder climates, but I'm sure it does. Thank you for giving us this insight.

I dont believe that. I have been to Niagara falls before on a family trip for my birthday. The sight was amazing. At night the falls had different color lights shining and I went around July 4th so there was also fireworks over the falls :)

Fireworks over the falls would be so cool. They are a magnificent sight all by themselves. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I've never been to Niagara Falls any time but in the summer. It's damp and cold enough then without being there in winter. I love it, but I'll stick to summer visits. Thank you for your response.

You're kidding. I wouldn't have thought that could happen. Do you have the email still. I would like to see it because my husband works in Niagara falls and goes there all the time.

Does he really? That's fantastic. We've been there several times and are always amazed. I posted the picture I received in #1 above. Maybe he can find out if the photo is real or a fake. It looks real, but in this computer generated world, you never can tell. Thanks for responding.

If that were true and it happened again, I would make a trip to us and slide down it. Sure it would hurt but how many people can say they slid down niagra falls? Not many.

Good point. I wonder how many times in its history it has actually frozen like this. It's an awesome sight all the time, but something like this would be spectacular. Believe me, it would be a long, long slide to the bottom. Niagara Falls are BIG! But I guess if I had to pick one, I'd prefer sliding to going over the falls in a barrel like a bunch of people have tried to do.

That's why I sort of hedged when I wrote my topic. It is almost beyond the scope of imagination that something like this could take place. And, you're right. Even if it is a fake somehow, it boggles the mind thinking about it. I received a post from a guy who was letting me have it about posting something boring like this. I can't imagine a mindset that wouldn't allow you to appreciate something so fantastic.

I visited Niagara Falls a few years ago and I saw pictures of the Falls when it was frozen over. It was, as you say, incredible. It must have been extremely cold for that to have happened. Niagara Falls is such a beautiful place and I had such a peaceful feeling when I was there. The falls were so soothing to the nerves. I rode in a boat below the falls and got wet. I also went through some kind of tunnel like thing under the falls. It is a very interesting place.

I find this hard to believe having seen Niagara Falls I just can't picture it being completely frozen, I could be very wrong it's just an opinion.

It does not surprise me at all. There have been many severe winters despite the silly claims in the media of the worst winter being made regularly. In London the Thames used to freeze over and I have seen references to fairs being held on the ice. This would seem impossible when viewing the Thames today, but we do know that it occurred often.

i think it could happen because it happens all the time for smaller waterfalls it would just have to be very cold for an extened amount of time.
