Abilify and my son, who just happens to be autistic.

Well. With not a little trepidation we enrolled our son in a clinical trial for the prescription drug Abilify. I was a little nervous about it, as it is a controlled substance and I just didn't know how he would react to it. He is taking a daily dose of two milligrams (2 mg.). I have to say that the change in him was almost immediate. He has slowed down markedly. I do not see the hyperactivity I am so used to at this point, and the hand stims and chewing behaviors seem much reduced. He is much subdued, though, and seems rather sad to me, but perhaps it is just that he has slowed down. He is also napping in the afternoons, something he has not done since he was about a year and a half old. They were considering upping his dosage to five milligrams (5 mg.) but it was decided that, for now, he can stay at the two milligram dose. I think I am happiest with that. I am hopeful, though, that perhaps now he will be able to respond better to speech and occupational therapy and that, hopefully, someday, he will speak to us.
