My bossy cat is trying to kick me off the couch!

My big cat is a real lounge lizard and he loves to kick back and relax all over the house. There isn't one spot in my home (ulpholstered or otherwise) that he hasn't gently claimed as his own. Pretty much once he lays on an area, he thinks it belongs to him and won't let anyone else sit there again. And, that poses a problem, cause there's no way I'm giving up my couch to my furry baby! I love my cat, but I'm not sitting in the floor! So, most times he sits on the pillow behind my head when I'm on the couch. And, occasionally, he takes a swipe at me to show his indignance that I would sit on his couch. More playful than anything. But, definitely annoying cause he's totally serious! What can one do about a very bossy cat that insists on claiming furniture and not letting anyone else sit there? Are there any techniques or chemicals that can make him realize that certain areas are just for him and others are for the humans? Would appreciate some gentle and loving ways of dealing with my overbearing, bossy, yet adorable fur ball cat! Thanks!

Well I've heard having a piece of tuna or shrimp to guide cats or to have that piece on you while training your cat can help get your point across. You can also try a play laser if its interested. Also he's taking paws and swiping as part of the territory marking. And of course cats are finicky about their areas and will choose some on whims. Others choose due to master subconscious cues, or to compete for attention. If your cat has something else it marks in such a way (a pillow, blanket or some kind of cloth perhaps) try to substitute for that. Coax your cat onto it. I'm kinda brain fried Queenie, sorry I can't put more down on paper. I'm off to bed. Just give a holler and I'll answer it when I'm fresher. Have a good night, and good luck with the cat, I'm sure it'll work out.

Well our cat is the same way- she is a Huge pain- I hate cleaning the cat hair off the furniture more than anything else- So I tried spraying her with a bit of water when she comes off the blanket- I put a blanket on the couch and chair for her to sit on- she started to dig the couch and the walls- ripping wallpaper! ARGH--- my sig other mixed up this cayenne pepper and water mixture and put it on the walls where she was digging- Man one sniff of that and she was gone-

LOL! My Wilby is a bit like that. If he is asleep on the couch or anywhere else for that matter, he won't let anyone else (cat or human) get close to him! I must admit I tend to let him get away with it though. They only have short lives, and Wilby was ill-treated before I found him - so I want to make his life as happy as possible.

I don't really have any good advice for you. My cat and both of my dogs are the same way. They generally do get down if one of us wants to sit where they are sitting, though. My cat does the swiping thing, too, but usually only to the dogs. We just give them dirty looks and tell them no, if they try to boss us around. I've heard that spraying a cat with water will help break bad habits, but I've never done that to my cat. It didn't work with my dogs for getting in the trash, and I just don't feel like trying it with my cat. It seems to mean considering her misbehaviors are so small.
