I was waiting in the doctors surgery today and noticed a lady tearing pages out of the magazines in the waiting room. She tore out 5 pages while I was siting there. I couldn't help but wonder How many other people do this? Which has lead me to starting this discussion. I have been guilty of doing this many years ago, but not recently, I feel akward, as if I'm doing something wrong... There not my property, so I should leave them intact for others to read without the annoyance of pages missing..... Please share your thoughts and experiences on tearing pages out of magazines.. Do you think it is wrong? or acceptable in some cases?

I'm sure if the magazine was one of many and quite out of date it would not be a problem if you asked if you could have it. I like to read magazines in waiting rooms and I'd be a bit chuffed if I discovered missing pages. I think this sort of thing is just selfish and bloody rude!

Excelent comment Ms Tickle. It would be more appropriate to ask instead of tearing out pages to inconvenience others..... that is just selfish, people should show some consideration for others......

I DONT do it and I think its sad. Maybe even wrong. But I guess you do what you gotta do to keep stuff. I know I've seen the mags missing pages too. Yeah its how it goes... they probably figure its gonna happen whoever office you are in. Sad though.

It is sad that people think they have the right to take what they want without thinking about how others would feel, from their doing so.....

I haven't done that in years either. But, I must say that if there is an article on the back, I won't do it at all. Now, if it's an insert card like with a coupon or a perfume sample, it's fair game as far as I'm concerned. Tearing out pages with information on the back (no the Marlboro Man's photo doesn't count as info to me), that's just rude. Those magazines are for people to read. I've been in the position where I was reading an article and went to turn to the page where the article is supposed to be continued & the continued part was torn out. It can be frustrating for the reader.

very frustrating..... Insert cards fine, but they are usually already been taken out anyway....

It really isn't appropiate, as the magazines are there for everyone to read. The woman you saw has a never to do this. If I saw this happening, I probably wouldn't say anything, but just "stare" at the person.

I believe I might have done this on occasion to when I was younger but would never do anything like this now as I would feel horrible for destroying something that doesn't belong to me and the fact that the magazines are left there for all of us to look at not to desroy because we see something we like in them . I can't imagine taking five pages out though as she might as well have just taken the magazine with her .

I thought it was quiet rude to take so many. She should of just asked if she could have the magazine or just takien it anyway. Seems she had no remorse anyway... I was young when I did it and I remember feeling guilty then. The point is distroying and taking other people's property, is wrong....

OH! yes I agree with you it look very ackward and silly tearing pages from magzines. That lady should have avoided doing that at a Doctor's clinic atleast. Others also read those magazines, and anyone will feel bad and fume, seeing a torn magazine. I do not to it and nor do I approve this kind of action. Good Post indeed!

Thanks deepak... I wondered whether she actually felt guilty about doing it, but I suspect not, otherwise she wouldn't have continued....

I think its a very selfish act- she just spoiled the reading fun for all the other visitors. May be you should have given her a piece of your mind. I hate people who tear up or mark books. With pencils its okay but using markers-ballpens and especially if its aborrowed book from library. I feel its disrespectful and rude to do that. Just shows how selfish a person you are.

I know, Very true.... I wanted to say something but I didn't want to embarass myself either there was a few other people in the waiting room too, and didn't want to make a scene out of it, although I would assume they would have sided with me anyway especially one of the men because he too keeped looking at her and giving her a look...

Hi there. I have also teared pages out of a magazine and not felt good about it... One day in the doctors surgery while waiting for my son, I found an interesting magazine, which I wanted to read and ran out of time, I simply went an asked the receptionist if I could have the magazine, and she said sure, you can take it... So now, instead of ripping pages I just ask for it...
