May I ask how many people donate either money or time to charity, and which charity?

I used to give my time to charity but now I seem to have less free time. However, I do give to charity. I have a monthly standing order to WWF for sponsorship of an orang utan and another regualr payment to the RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind). At work I collect the stamps off envelopes which then go to raise money for a local hospice and I recycle printer cartridges that raises money for a children's hospital in London. I usually out my small change in the collection jar at my newsagents and I always give money on flag days.

Oh, I just saw anonymili's comment and I realised I also give through charity shops. I buy mostly books in charity shops.

I am not a great giver to charity for no reason. I will spend money several times a week in charity shops though but I do not just give to charity when people are collecting in the street as I do not always trust that they are really charity collectors. I work very hard for my money and have always done so, there are many deserving charity cases but really I do believe charity begins at home. I do not feel like just handing over cash to charities unless I get something in return, which is why I spend money in charity shops, I will buy books or clothes or toys or other items and usually put the change in the little containers they have on their counters. I often donate my clothes to charity too but never stuff that is torn or tatty, often I donate unwanted gifts too so that someone can buy it for a small price and make use of them. I can't give a specific charity name as there are dozens of charity shops near where I live and work, such as Cancer Research, Sue Ryder, PDSA, Oxfam, etc.

I think in the US if you look around there are lots of struggling families they aren't hared to find. Is your neighbors phone working? Has there home been dark at night. Was someone sick hurt at work or laid off, or going thru some other hardship that couldn't be avoided. Many people loose there homes to forclosure every year due to accidents that cause a family to loose half or all of their income. I was told it was the number one reason. Try living on one pay check when you are used to having two and that was just enough. Most agencies don't help these people untill after they have lost everything. If the online charity sites would work it would be wonderful. Just think if everyone who could afford it would give $1 a week how many people that would help. I'd give up a cup of coffe a week to keep a family from being homeless. It is a shame people paying a mortgage for years and kids, and old folks being displaced. But I'm only one person and I'm going thru a hard time myself I plan to start my own site to help people when I get on my feet.

I don't really make it a big deal to give money to specific charities all the time. Whenever I'm at certain stores and have money to give charities that stores run, such as Petsmart and their charities for pets and adoptions, I'll drop in change whenever I have the chance and the change to do so. If I'm at Mcdonalds or something and they have a donation box out for Ronald Mcdonald charities and I have extra change, I'll drop money in. I mean, every little bit helps. And, I'm not the richest person ever, but whenever I have enough change left over, I figure that it's best to give some to someone or something that really needs it more than I do. I don't have to really know the charity either, if I see a charity box out at a reputable place, I'll drop in what I can.

I don't give much to charity simply because I believe that it is charities, through the hope of bettering people's lives that are perpetuating the misery that poor people in the world are experiencing. If funding for all charities suddenly stopped overnight I suspect that there would be, sadly, millions of deaths, probably mostly in Africa through hunger and disease. As a result I'd hope there would be a world outcry and something more concrete would be achieved for these people. Afterall how many charitable trusts and concerts are there in the world these days. There's still poverty and famine 20+ years after liveaid. Granted I'm sure there are some Ethiopians in the world these days and for that I am thankful but how many millions more must suffer before something more than charity is considered.

Not all charities are about hunger and poverty though. What about ones that aim to save wildlife and endangered species?

Replace poverty with greed in the case of many endangered species.

Fair point but again, I can't help but think that many of the endangered species in the world wouldn't be as endangered if there wasn't great poverty and thus desire to make as much income as possible. Afterall I'd like to think few people would desire to work in jobs that destroy their countryside unless they had to on economic grounds.

I don't give money to charity simply because we could use all our money very good ourselves. I rather give my family to eat then donate money to charity

I don't give much to charity simply for the reason that I believe it perpetuates the hunger, disease and misery that many people are experiencing. If, for example, all funding for all charities was suddenly pulled there would be millions of deaths...mostly I suspect in Africa through hunger and disease. If this was the case I'd hope there would be an outcry around the world and perhaps something real could be done to alleviate these people's sufferings and the world would be a more equal place.
