well if i say about myself i do mind them a bit if not in every way like i prefer sitting straight while having my meals on the table,i use napkins most of the times,i prefer to use fork at table although in our country its not very essential as per the foods we use to cook and eat and i don't prefer to talk much while eating plus a few more of them..but about other people sitting beside me i really don't mind at all for their consideration and giving importance to these manners and i just enjoy eating sitting along with them and in their company ..how about you friends..how much important and necessary are they for you?

Hi, basic table manners i think are very important to be instilled into all kids right from the start,so that when they are our age, it comes naturally to them and becomes a habit. Its something that i feel your or my parents must have done with us, the reason being that you use a napkin and prefer sitting on the table and eating with a fork and other things. Similarly, i too like to sit straight on my chair at the dining table, use the spoon or fork which ever is preferabel with the particular food and meal, use my napkin, eat with my mouth closed, dont talk too much while eating, chew my food propelry etc. These are basic things that ought to be know and been taught . Of course it does happen that at times, we do have friends over or relatives, who are not much bothered and dont want to follow all this, its alright at those times, to break these rules and just eat and be like them too. But at home, we all do follow the basic table manners, though we do talk and discuss things alongside our meal times, as we dont get much time, as each one of us is rather busy with our work etc.

Yes i agree that kids learn to sit properly at the dinner table and become more disciplined and civilised, specially when eating food. Guess, we ought to teach them these basic things, of course we should not be strict always and let them have the fun time too alongside, but keep training time different from disciplining time.

hi vinzen, you are right, kids should be told about the basic ones from the beginning so that they don't feel awkward if they need them at some part of their life and it can be any..and it also instills a bit of civilized behavior also if i am not wrong..yes we should always try to keep ourselves free and break the rules when we want to..

of course,it is very important..you'll see here on how educative the people is..(im not saying that if you dont have any table manners, you're not well educative..its just that,we're considering it..)..I applied some table manners outside.like here in the office,restaurant..most of the time in public..some of these manners are using fork and spoon, sitting properly, dont speak when your mouth is full..something like that..the basic table manners..just to show them that you have a table etiquette.but if i am just at home,it feels good to sometimes forget those manners..lol.,like using your hands instead of using fork and spoon, have someone to talk to,chatting while eating, but not that much..(its fun if you have someone while eating.)..and the best one is putting your foot on top of your chair..lol..im only doing that only if i am inside our house..

hi zer0charly,i understood what you meant..tell you a secret even i do all this at times..LOL;-)..yes you are right when we are at ease with ourselves we can follow anyway..but in interacting with people we need to have them as it doesn't show that we are very sophisticated but by doing so we are actually giving respect to everybody around us to have their meals without creating any nuisance like if you are sitting with those persons who really mind manners..

I have always tried to use my best table manners, even at home. I did this when my children were young so as to set an example for them. I continue now out of respect for myself and for my husband! Also, if one becomes lax in their manners at home, it is too easy to fall into a bad habit and find oneself using poor manners in public!

i agree with you crazynurse that if we become a bit lenient we can easily get ourselves put into bad habits..

I do mind my manners and I hate it when people do not mindd thiers. My biggest pet pieve is people who do not close thier mouth when chewing- not only is this disgusting- but it is unsanitary as food can fly out of thier mouth at any moment.

When I was younger I didn't care to mind them so much, but when I had children I am surely glad my mom stressed the importance of it. My children are very athletic and we often tend banquets and dinners at the end of sporting seasons. I tend to look around to see how bad some people's table manners are and it is frightening! People who have bad table manners kind of look like animals, plus I dont want to know how your food looks before it goes down your throat, NASTY! Then I look at my children and smile I feel proud that they use their table manners and do not look like they were raised in a cave or something. I mind them more as an adult but glad they were taught to me so I can pass it along to my children.
