Passport - For a Weekend in Nova Scotia

United States

We want to go to Nova Scotia for a 4-day weekend to celebrate our 9th anniversary. Well, in order to do that I need to get a passport and hubby needs to renew his Dutch passport. Mine is a simple process. For Hubby, he must go to the Dutch Consulate in NYC to renew his. To me, it is not worth the bother. Maybe it will be easier to go somewhere in the USA.

Wow, what a pain in the butt! This whole passport thing is really sucking all around for even the Americans at this point. They've allowed us to go through until I believe January 08 without passports locally but they claim in 08 they will begin forcing the issue. It's so stupid.

I didn't know that you could still go over the border w/o a passport until 2008! Maybe we can still go without having to get a passport. We will definately have to get it done at some point. There will come a time when we are fiancially able to visit the Netherlands and we will need passports for that. Thanks for the info!

Wow, Elusive, that sounds like it would be a great anniversary trip! Sometimes, for something that will mean so much when you look back on it, a little extra trouble is worth it. We are often tempted to take the easy road, but you might have such fun in Nov Scotia that you will find yourself wondering how you ever thought not to go.

I could wait for another time. I have wanted to go to Nova Scotia, but during the summer months when it is a bit warmer.

Oh if I could go to Nova Scotia there would be no stopping me! I haven't been well traveled though, so I would go anywhere! I know it seems like a pain in the butt, but you seem stressed, why not go through all the crap to enjoy yourselves. I'll go in your place! You deserve a good vacation with hubby.

Gee, that's a lot of effort just to renew his passport. Won't they do it by mail? I suppose they will charge a lot to renew his passport too! You will have to go to a fair bit effort to get a passport too, if the rules & admin are anythuing like ours. I m sure there are some great places to visit nearer to home.

We Canadians now have to have a passport to visit the States. We were planning an Alaskan Cruise and so we had to apply for us at the beginning of this year and it took a month for us to get them, but it does mean that we can now travel around the world, (when my imaginary rich uncle bites the dust.) I suppose the same rule applies for Americans visiting Canada. But do you want to hear the sad news. (sob, sob) your passport can last eight years, ours only five.

if you are just american, you shouldnt need one to coe to canada...it seems to me, that the american border crossing guards are the ones that give everyone the biggest hassle.

We went to Niagara Falls last year and they gave us a hard time. My worry is my husband not being able to come back. He is a resident of the USA so I would hope he wouldn't have a problem. But, you never know.

It was a pretty bad idea to require all citizens to show their passports to cross the Canadian border. It really just causes more problems than it's worth. Does your husband have to go to the Consulate in person or can he get it done by mail? Either way, it's better for him to have a renewed passport.
