What is the most over-used word...

I'm finding the more that I watch the news or read, the more irritated I am with words that are being over-used. Hero is one that ruffles my feathers lately. What do you think is the most over-used word in the English language today?

What bothers me more are the words they use constantly that aren't even words. I can't tell you how many times I have heard a newscaster say "irregardless" which is absolutely meaningless. Regardless means "without regard" so irregardless would negate that completely. Needless to say, I am tired of J-Lo, Li-Lo and all other permutations as well as Brangelina and other combination of names of couples. It might be nice if they tried English once in a while on TV.

Irregardless is one that irritates me, too. I'm also tired of the Brangelina, TomKat and other combinations. I also am tired of BFF and the like.

I totally agree about BFF and what is really annoying is how these words and abbreviations make their way into professional publications and news sites. They should have better editors.

Those are horrid combinations are being called...please don't hurl, just yet- "Franken- Words" ! I'm completely stultified and aghast that a whole culture has become so blazingly lazy, that even people's given names are being adulterated and deformed in this way... What's to become of the Speakers, and Spellers of the future? Have you noticed "that look" when you speak to someone who might be in their teen years or early twenties? That "Look" says it all... They have been taught to disdain or laugh at people who bother to speak English, and even moreso- to ignore you, especially when it's a service scene. I can't tell you how many times that I have said " Thank You", to a clerk, who wouldn't even acknowlege me with a "Your Welcome" Confusion abounds, and it's a "Field Day"! LOL! :)

The one that bothers me is, "anyways." The word is "Anyway!" There is no "s" on the end. There is no such word as "anyways!" When someone uses that Word with an "s" on the end They go Down, down, down, in my estimation!

That's a good one! That goes right up there with "irregardless." I cringe every time I hear that one. Thanks for posting.

Do people use malakas the way some African Americans use the n-word for each other, or is in a different context? Is it meant to be insulting?

Yo pola! Sorry, I couldn't resist. I can't stand that, too. LOL! I also can't stand how people say, "Hey" instead of "Hello."

What an interesting observation! I can see how "I'm sorry" is overused, but I'm inclined to think (just from personal experience) that "Thanks" is not used enough. Maybe it's a regional thing?
