Knoppix - nice, stable, no need to install, has everything. And manages to recognize all my hardware!

Knoppix is real nice and convenient, but if you want to run the live-cd, you must have a large ram.

I want to have a try, but I do not have a computer with so low ram.

I am running it on a computer with 1GB RAM but I think it can run well on 512MB, maybe even 256 MB is not impossible but probably it will be slow. I have never tried it but maybe I should try and see.

well if going to experiment you will find ubuntu so limited. Ubuntu makes linux too easy (with all those apps pre-installed) and some people use it with no idea whats linux. My first distro was ubuntu 5.10, but in 2 weeks i change it to fedora, and then in 2 months i change it to Arch. Ubuntu like Fedora, is not 100% customizable, i had problems changing desktop environment because them have too many applications pre-installed. With Arch you have what you want and nothing crash. Try to change your desktop to xfce, blackbox or another. You will get a trouble.

I use Ubuntu and loving it. It's so easy to install and pretty much detected my hardware and peripherals. I'm so dumbfounded with compiz fusion and beryl and it so leaves windows on the dust. The only thing that keeps me coming back to windows are the apps that linux lack. Like Skpye, although it comes with its linux flavor, it lacks the webcam functionality. So I end up using windows to run skype just for that. Other than that, linux pretty much have counterparts for windows based programs, and probably does 'em better. Microsoft has the market share now, and mac is trailing behind. But sooner than later, Linux will catch-up and that possibility is as clear as day. My two cents worth...

I love Ubuntu, if it wasn't for games I wouldn't use Windows at all.

Opensuse is my favorite and been using suse Linux for the past 3 years from suse 9. I tried ubuntu and I just cant understand why it got so popular. I didnt mean to offend anyone using it. But when I compared it with opensuse I was missing a whole lot of features. So my choice is opensuse.
