1. Virginia Beach, VA (pop. close to a million) 2. San Jose, CA (pop. 910,528) 3. Honolulu (pop. 908,521) 4. El Paso, TX (pop. 601,839) 5. Anaheim, CA (pop. 335,992) 6. NY, New York (pop. 8.1 million) 7. Austin, TX (pop. 693,019) 8. Raleigh, NC (pop. 332,084) 9. Santa Ana, CA (pop. 344,991) 10. Lexington, KY (pop. 268,124) The survey considers statistics for murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault and burglary and motor vehicle theft per 100,000 citizens. The most dangerous city in America was St. Louis, followed by Detroit, Cleveland, Oakland, Baltimore, Memphis, Kansas City, MO, Atlanta, Cincinnati and Washington. Any surprises here to anyone? I personally thought New York was probably on the most dangerous cities list and was surprised to find out I was wrong.

Hi estherlou! All the while, I thought it was New York that would top the list in the most dangerous city too. I guess, I was wrong then. I am glad that my relatives there are living in the top 10 safest place. Thanks for the information. Take care and have a nice day!

Really? It surprises me that New York would be considered to be one of the safest cities. It really came as no surprise that Detroit and Oakland were among the most dangerous though.

I am not surprised by the safest cities, but I thought New Orleans would definitely be in the most dangerous as the murder and crime rate here is just as bad - if not worse - than before Katrina.

Austin probably is only on the list because we have more police per capita than any other city our size in the U.S.

I have to agree with you, as I read through the list, I was surprised to see New York on the safest city list. I would thought it would have been in the most dangerous city as well.

Yes I thought New york would have been on the dangerous list too. I see new orleans is not on the dangerous list. Probably because of the hurricane. But every other one, especially for the dangerous list did not shock me at all.

I'm really not surprised to see Memphis TN on the list as a "bad" city. I've known several people who moved from there to near where I live. One of them was so traumatized by his Memphis experience that he will not talk about it and gets upset when the subject is even brought up.
