How did your upbringing influence your parenting style?

Do you raise your children in a manner similar to the way you were raised or do you tend to use a completely different approach? I want my child to respect me but not fear me which is the opposite of how I felt as a child. I appreciate my parents and I don't think that they did everything wrong but for the most part, I don't want to raise my child the way I was raised.
