What would you do if you ran out of trash bags?

Last night I went on a cleaning binge and cleared out an entire desk full of old papers and junk we don't really use anymore. And, it wasn't until I had everything piled high on the floor, that I realized I was out of trash bags. So, I had no way to throw anything away!
So, that's when I got creative and decided to use the big cardboard box that my microwave had been shipped in. It worked nicely to hold the papers until I got more trash bags. Most times I don't have to go to such extremes, but it was certainly better than leaving papers all over the livingroom floor.
So, what would you do if you ran out of trash bags and needed to throw something away? Would you improvise? Would you borrow a bag? Would you hop in the car and go to the store for more?

The very reason I save the my plastic shopping bags is for this purpose. Running out of trash bags can be very frustrating- especially at the wrong time :)

We use grocery bags a lot and then dump into a big garbage- so I would have used grocery bags—or the box was a great idea as well- Papers are recycled at my house- so all papers would have gone in the recycling cartons. Doesn’t it feel great to hoe out!

That has happened to me soooo many times! Like you, I run to the garage and look for a box. There seems to always be some box in the garage that I can use. If worse came to worse, I would tote the stuff in small bags (like WalMart bags or grocery store bags) to my outdoor can!

I would use my stash of grocery bags. I always like to stash a few extra grocery bags away to use for the smaller trash cans in my bathrooms. But here lately I've been going on a cleaning spree in my kitchen and throwing the grocery bags away. They were cluttering up my cabinets. So if I ran out of those (which is unlikely) I would find a box like you did and use that.

We keep all the plastic bags from the stores for things like that. I also use them to line little garbage cans throughout the house and whenever I just am cleaning out a specfic area of the house and I dont feel like carrying the garbage can around with me. So they are always coming in handy in my house.

Well, for paper, it wouldn't be a concern because paper goes in the recycling bin downstairs.
The rest of the time, I use the bags that groceries come in, and I haven't really ever run out. We use about two per week, and we go grocery shopping every week, so it balances out. (We actually have quite a few extras).

I would improvise until I got some trash bags. I probably would not stop what I was doing to run to the store because if I stopped then chances are I would not get back to it. I usually keep plastic grocery bags in the cabinet so I would most likely use one of those or a box and if all else failed I could use one of those plastic storage tubs (not for messy trash though) just long enough to get a garbage bag. Needing a trash bag is not something urgent enough to go borrow one. Because by the time I went to a neighbor's house to borrow a trash bag I could have went to the store and bought some.

Although I don't experience running out of trash bags often, I keep the plastic bags from grocery shopping for just an occasion. They also work wonders as bathroom trash bags.
Though there have been times, that I have used boxes to remove large quantities of garbage out of the house, during such times as spring cleaning, and I also do another big clean just before the onset of winter. It's amazing how much junk one can accumulate over such short periods of time.

I have seen running out of bags before and have done the same as you and placed the paper in a box big enough to hold it all as we often have boxes around the house from pampers but now we have a drum outside where we throw all our papers in it the drum to burn but if I didn't have a box and was desperate I would definitely run to the store as I hate starting a job and not finishing it after I went through all the work to start it to begin with .

I'm a little bit obsessive when it comes to stocking up on certain things. We buy three different sizes of trash bags, and before we open the last box of any size, we have already bought more. I'm really weird about stuff like that. I have this fear of running out of stuff, so there are lots of different things that I stock up on like that.
I can't imagine ever coming to a point where I was out of all three sizes of trash bags, but if I ever did, I would just use a Walmart bag, like so many other people said. That is, assuming I had run out of all three sizes of trash bags that I keep, and the recycle bags I use. We usually recycle the Walmart bags, but we still usually have a bunch around the house. My husband uses them to take his food to work, so I always make sure to keep plenty around for that. Plus we usually only take the bags to recycle them about every 3-4 months anyway.
If it was just papers all over the place, though, they would be getting recycled instead of going in the trash anyway.

That's happened to me very recently. The first time it happened I went and found the plastic bags they give me at Walgreens when I check out. So I just filled several of them up and took them to the trash bin. I always keep those because they are easy to reuse.
But three days ago I didn't even have those plastic bags. So I went into my closet and got a big box that my comforter set came in when I moved into my apartment several months ago. That worked great, but it was heavy carrying it to the garbage.
