Does anyone out there use the Mittleider method of gardening. I have been very happy with the yields the last three years. So mush so next year I am making a leap into building a mini Homestead. I figure 40% of my income will come from the Internet and 60% from gardening. Anyone out there running a successful homestead? Be well Steve

Hi Steve; I have never tried growing using anything to do with hydroponics but I bet it would be a fun and interesting project. I do like the idea of maximizing space and growing hydroponically without the cost associated with hydroponics. I found this interesting website: Your Free Mittleider Gardening Basics Course Ebook! http://growfood.com/vegetable_gardening/20/what-is-the-mittleider-method I stick with soil and compost mostly but I am definitely going to be looking into Mittleider method of gardening for sure. Thank you for this post! I am the flower gardener but I do give a helping hand in the vegetable garden as well. Our is quite large. Rows are 40 feet and consist of about 15 rows. I can't see the garden at the moment so unable to count them all. This year we are growing to resell and will be the first. Often we just trade with neighbors and other avid gardeners. I think that your ratio is impressive and I wish you all the very best. Please stay in touch! Your Squidoo lens was most informative. Thank you! I have added you as a friend as I feel that we may have some interesting tips to share with one another or at least fun stories of success as well as any failures. I am working towards eliminating wire worm as they raise havoc on the potatoes and carrots. I am going to start by setting traps, rotating crops and using diatomaceous earth, also know as fossil flour. Have you ever used? Do you have wire worms? If so, what have you done to protect your crops from them? Happy Gardening!

Wow that is a huge planting area, very cool. I have 3 thirty foot Mittleider soil beds and then 2 more fifteen footers in the back garden. You can see some of my Mittleider garden videos here http://www.youtube.com/steveffeo And we also have a free Mittleider gardening Yahoo group. (Mylot wont let me paste this link for some reason? You can find the join button a bit down the page here http://www.squidoo.com/foodforeveryonefoundation I never had wire worms before. One key aspect of the Mittleider method is we setup the beds weeds and rock free and then weed ongoing, most (but not all) bug problems can be avoided by having a clean planting bed and keeping what plants you can (like tomatoes and cucumbers and mellons) OFF the ground, bugs just love to crawl right up and start eating away. This year i am going to really focus on taking more videos with my Flip cam, I am the volunteer marketing manager for the Food for Everyone Foundation and have found that video really gets people interested in the Method. If you have any questions please just ask and also join the group and say hi. Happy Gardening Steve

Hi Steve, thank you for your response. Light bulbs are going on here. I understand what you are saying and is a brilliant idea. I have tried to persuade the "boss" to create raised beds but so far, no go. I will bring this up again. Makes perfect sense. I am going to catch you video and such, thank you for the links. I am a bit short on time but I will be back. Oh yes, the size of the vegetable garden is cool! A great place to be too, especially when the strawberry patch is throwing out huge berries constantly until late September :D Mmm. My Pup goes for the peas. I have a photo of it and will paste when I come back. I bet the video do work wonders and look forward to seeing the ones here now and later on this year. Thanks again for your post and I will be back. Enjoy!
