How do you get pasta sauce stain out of a carpet or rug?

I've got a very small rug that I keep in the kitchen and lately it's been looking very tracked up with kitchen messes. To make matters worse, the other day my 3 1/2 year old deposited her pasta on it, with a nice helping of red pasta sauce and now it looks a mess. I was able to clean up most of the mess, but now there's a really big red stain on the rug.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to remove pasta sauce stain out of carpet or rug fibers? Which carpet cleaning product works best for tomato or food based stains? And, if possible, are there any homemade remedies for getting the stain out?

Oxyclean is a good thing to use. There are also common stain removers if the stain isn't that set.
Another thing to try is warm glycerol/glycerin (not hot) on the stain, then use cold water to spounge it/blot it out. If its a rug that can be washed, try a normal wash cycle on cool water. Air dry it, you do NOT want to cook it with unneeded heat
Also you can try laundry detergent (gel ones). Use a bit of it on an unsightly part of the carpet and then apply it to see if any discoloration occurs. If not, then try a little of your detergent on the spot, wash it up and use cold water while doing it.
If the unnatural fails, there is always light vinegar, baking soda and lemons as a mixture. Again, try this in an undisclosed part so you can check for discoloration.

Thanks! I will try all those ideas. I may see if it's washable. Not sure why I didn't think of that before.

We nurses swear by hydrogen peroxide. It gets out anything organic like blood, grass stains and etc. Tomatos are organic,so it should get the stain out! It has never failed me yet! Good luck!

Okay, that's pretty cool and I remember it does get out blood real well. I remember H202 is rather damaging on cloth and other objects. It can bleach several fabrics too, I remember that from experience, so don't be excessive.
Of course, it is your experience Crazynurse and everything within reason is always worth a try. I'd just say be careful :)
