What Do You Usually Have for Afternoon Tea?

Do you have afternoon tea at all? Is it in your culture? We do have a few snacks and a cup of tea around 3-4pm in the afternoon (yes even if we are working in the office). I usually would have some bread/ biscuits and the traditional "milk tea" here. I don't have it everyday, I just have it when I know I have to stay at work pretty late. So, what about you? Do you have afternoon tea? What do you usually eat for afternoon tea?

Nope, that is more of a british custom..and british-influenced countries. But not here. By the way...how do you manage to start so many discussions? WOW, it's amazing lol.

Oh, did I start too many? Hm, I kind of force my brain to work harder these days because I want to know what people would say to these things. Er, I hope it's not annoying for you...

My family is used to have our four o’clock tea after having a nap or back from work normally about five o’clock in the afternoon. Most of the time, I prepare a pot of hot English tea or Chinese green tea for our tea time. We enjoy eating some sandwiches, tarts, biscuits or toasts while having tea. Occasionally we have our four o’clock tea outside like coffee beans or kopitiam(coffee shop).

Yeah, taking green tea is really good especially after taking too much fatty food. It’s believed that green tea is quite effective in lowering the cholesterols of our body so as to keep our body healthy.

Oh yes! *laughs* We were under British rule and had that habit. Oh when you come to Hong Kong sometime, go to a local restaurant between 2.30pm - 5.30pm, they will have the tea set out and you don't really need to think about what to eat! *laughs*

I love milk tea, but usually do not have time for an afternoon snack OR a nap (I wish!), still it is a very nice idea, and I would if I could! Very late at night (just before bed), I like to have a nice cold glass of milk with chocolate syrup, a few teaspoons of coffee and a small scoop of ice cream gently stirred. Time allowing, if it is warm weather, I mix in a little finely crushed ice. Sometimes I have a small cookie or half a muffin with it. That is sort of my "you survived the day" treat and something I look forward to!

Oh wow, those sound really nice and really yummy! Usually at night, I avoid to eat absolutely anything. I would be too tired to anyway, just want to jump into bed real quick.

I know the feeling. Actually most "experts" seem to discourage late night snacking, but I got into the habit of eating late when I worked nights. If I don't have a little snack before bed I wake up in a few hours and have to go make myself a grilled cheese sandwich or eggs on toast or some other high protein high carb comfort food.

Hello wondericequeen, We do have afternoon tea here. As for my family, we only have the afternoon tea on weekends. We serve special traditional cookies with tea. I don't have my afternoon tea while working at the office. I always have a big thermos and some tidbits and just grab them whenever I want to... *laughs*

It's not really typical here in the states but then again we have a mix of so many cultures that anything goes, lol. However I just read a book that took place between the 1800's and 1990's (really long book, lol) in London/Germany/Paris and it made constant references to tea, so much so that I started having a cup (non decaf) before bed. But it also made me fall in love with the whole afternoon tea idea. It reminds me of when I used to have coffee in the afternoons after school with my grandmother and fresh bread from the bakery. I love that tea is a lot more gentle then coffee for the afternoon. I'm so glad you brought it up!

Yes it's more of a British thing and the tea usually goes with a mini cake or two, three biscuits. I think that's a lovely idea to have a break in the middle of the afternoon.

It is a great idea. It's funny that you mention the cake, all through the book they kept refering to cake and I was thinking, surely they do not have cake with tea every day. Is it like regular, frosted sweet cake or more of like a pound cake? All these people can't be eating cake 24/7 and not be fat, if indeed they are then I call that completely unfair and the #1 reason for me to move overseas, lol. Biscuts are very popular here in the Southern states, so is tea but they drink it cold and sweet.

We don't have such a habit here. But we can eat something like biscuits, snacks or some drinks when you feel hungry.

We have afternoon breaks at work around 3-4pm, its basically almost the same thing as your except most of us drink coffee. One of my officemate drinks tea everytime and I do also sometimes during afternoon breaks. We usually have bread or sandwiches along with our drinks during afternoon breaks. :-)

Wow, it's really nice to actually have a break! We just have that "break" but we work and eat at the same time! What a hassle sometimes!

I do have afternoon tea, in fact I went home with my boyfriend this afternoon (to my mother's house) as she baked some chocolate & macadamia brownies on her day off =] Although we don't usually have 'tea' (we're more inclined to have juice or just water), my family has always done the 4 o'clock "snack". Normally I have some sort of sweet, or just a savoury snack. I do try to keep my afternoon tea, as with all other meals, reasonably healthy =D
