Does anyone make homemade spaghetti sauce? If so, how do you make it? If not, what brand do you use do you use? Why that brand? In what way does it taste better than all the others? Right now, I am making homemade spaghetti sauce for my husband's spaghetti. I simply boil down 2 large home grown tomatoes, skins off, and a little less than than a 1/2 of a cup of Classico Spicy Red Pepper Spaghetti Sauce two pinches of North African seasoning. When the tomatoes are boiled down, I add turkey meatballs and cook about 10 minutes. Voila! It's finished. My husband thinks gives his seal of approval by eating every bite on the plate.

I've always wanted to make it homemade. I only remember my mother using Ragu. That's what I used when I first started cooking. More recently I've switched to using Classico Sweet Basil Marinara. I've attempted to make home made sauce twice. The first time I was completely guessing at what I was doing. It tried to make it straight from fresh tomatos. I chopped em up and threw them in the blender and pressed the button. I probably added some water. This was years ago, so I don't remember all the details, but as I'm sure you can imagine, it didnt work. I made tomato FROTH. lol The second time, I had heard from a few friends that they made "homemade" spaghetti sauce by using canned tomato sauce and adding italian spices. It wasn't what I had in mind. I wanted to start with the whole ,fresh, tomato. But, once day I decided to make spaghetti but I didn't have my usual jar of premade sauce ready. I did have plenty of tomato sauce and some oregano and some other spices and onions, so I threw it all together. It wasn't bad. Now that I read that you poiled down the tomatos, I have a better idea of how it works. Do you skin the tomato before or after you boil it? Is it difficult to skin a tomato? I'll have to give it another try sometime. Thanks for the discussion.

Well I've done it by peeling it and then pureeing from there with most of the ingredients. Don't be discouraged if things don't go right, its just another lesson along the way.

I love Classico!!!! Some tomatoes you can peel the skins right off. Most of the time, place the tomatoes in the hot water and put them in the microwave for a few minutes...until it starts to boil. The take then out and let them cool. At that point, the skins should slip right off. Then I chop up the tomatoes...and then I add pepper, onions, herb, etc. Then I boil it down.

I use Classico when making pasta. Once in a while, I'll use 2 cans of crushed tomatoes, spicy seasoning, red pepper flakes.

I use Hunts, usually the regular brand if I am making spaghetti and meatballs, and the one with the red hot peppers if I am making macaroni casserole. I also use Hunts Garlic and Herb, and sometimes the Classico ones, especially the one that containers Italian sausages. I usually add a bay leaf to them and some fennel seed to make it taste better. I have not made turkey meatballs, we usually buy lean round but we did have ground pork once but that was for Chinese, not Italian.

New meaning to the word "naked chef" - My wonderful naked chef
He prefers Casa Visco for their low sugar content. Cacciatore (onions and mushrooms) Homestyle (spaghetti sauce) Fra Diavolo, Hot chilli sauce,(he loves this one, sometimes too hot for me) He does all the cooking, I will only cook when he has worked very late. Our best times are spent in the kitchen. I do all the chopping and peeling! I haven't uploaded pic's in a long time let's see if it is going to work this time.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnie, it is beginning to look like Joep does all the cooking. I have to look and see if the name of this spaghetti sauce is online. It is, and they have all different kinds. What kind does Joep use?

I make my own sauce. I first saute onions and garlic in olive oil then I add two cans of diced tomatoes I usually buy the ones with garlic and basil in them. I simmer this for about an hour. I add basil and oregano to taste. My daughter will not eat any other sauce since I started making this one.

Growing up, my mom used Prego and I loved it! She uses cheaper spaghetti sauce now, Ragu. I hate that stuff. LOL, so at my house I use Walnut Acres Ogranic spaghetti sauce. It's low sodium, fat free, and tastes wonderful.

I'm not really good at homemade sauce, but when I buy premade sauces I usually choose Ragu or Prego. They have several different varieties that you can always try something new. Your recipe sounds delicious!!

I usually make my own. I put some oilve oil in a pan with garlic to toast it, sometimes I also add a small finely chopped onion at this point as well. When the onion is translucent, I add 2 cans of tomato puree. Then basically, I just let it cook down and add some basil or whatever else as it cooks. If I do use jarred sauce, I like Barilla brand.

Spaghetti with sauce - My mom's spaghetti!
My mom is Italian and I learned very young to make my spaghetti sauce from scratch. I don't like to eat any other kind and seldom order any type of Italian food in a restaurant because I'm so spoiled!

I make my own sauce. I do occasionally keep some pre-made around for emergencies. Usually just store brand (and I spice it up). When I do my sauce I start by cooking whatever meat I plan on using (if any) with some chopped onion and minced garlic. I add some tomatoes, sometimes fresh and sometimes canned. Tomato paste if needed. And I season with garlic, basil, oregano, rosemary, marjoram and sometimes sage. If the tomatoes are a little too acidic I add a pinch of sugar. If I want it spicier, I'll add some red pepper flakes.

I make it homemade a few times. Other times I do take advantage of creature comforts and make it semi-homemade :)
