Barking Problem

I have a wonderful, loving 3-year-old black lab mix with a barking problem. I've had numerous dogs in the past, but this is my first lab mix. I know they are very hyper and energetic creatures by nature, but everytime she is "left out" or not the center of attention she will bark until she is either put in the house or petted by someone. She is a member of our family, of course, but there are times that she cannot be where we are; and I hate being barked at everytime I walk from the back yard to the front. I have seen barking behavioral collars at our local pet store and am wondering if anyone has had any luck with these...or any other corrections that have worked for you with this type of problem. Thanks in Advance

I have a cocker spaniel who use to bark non stop when people came to the house or when they left the house. Sometimes she barked for no good reason. What we did was get a spray bottle and when she would start to bark we would spray her while saying "quiet". The shock of getting wet would instantly stop the barking and once she was quiet she would get a trreat and be told she was being very quiet and good. You have to be as consistant as you can with this but it worked fairly quickly for my dog and now you just have to tell her to be quiet if she starts. I also recenlty saw this trick on Oprah so I guess other people have done it to. Hope that helps.

I can guess that you might have never scolded your dog for such an act. If that is the case, then let me tell you what i feel like. I myself have a choclate brown labrador who currently an year old. She also used to bark at me and my family members. We used to get annoyed with such a bad habit of her. What i did was, whenever, she barked at me or anyone else for the sake of not getting full attention. I used to say "NO" along with an expression of anger. After practicing the same for a few weeks, after she realized an approximate meaning of the word "NO", she almost left her bad habit and now whenever she barks, she either wants to play, or she wants to go out and do her buisiness. So you see my friend, it's very easy to train a Dog, although it takes a little bit of time. Thankyou for putting up sucha nice topic and asking for suggestions

A friend of mine who is a vet is actually looking into getting a bark collar for her dog. She isn't going to get the kind that shocks the dog but instead one that sprays citronella when the dog barks. The idea is that when this happens it startles the dog and interfers with it's scent of smell for a few seconds. This is supposed to surprise the dog so much that it stops barking. She hasn't gotten it yet, so I can't tell you if it has worked or not, but she needs something for when she is out and the dog barks a lot. Perhaps you might want to look into this as an alternative or other option.

I read a dog training book once where the writer suggested setting your dog up as follows. A member of the family hides inside, wile you go out allowing the dog think he is along creating the situatioon you dislike you go from the back of your house to the front, when the dog barks, the person comes out and tells the dog, no! When he becomes quiet the say good dog, and give him a treat. Then a few minutes later you create the same situation, forcing the dog to act out wile someone with in the house can correct him. I dont like the idea of a muzzle, then the dog cant dinr or do anything wile you are not in the house. I also read a great book 'how to speak dog' It is all about the history of dogs and how to understand them better, I loved this book! Hope this helps.
