Anyone ever had a toothache being pregnant? I chipped one of my teeth and my tooth hurts so bad. I dont think i can go to the dentist though being 5 months pregnant. Tylenol seems to take away most of the pain. Anyone else have suggestions about what i can do?

My dentist wouldnt treat me for a broken tooth when I was 5 months prgnant on my third child. He couldnt give me a local anesthetic to remove it as it broke in half. He told me that if he gave me an injection it goes straight to the baby too but if you have a high pain tolerance then you can opt for the treatment to be done without anesthetic, and it is very quick. There is one problem that can happen and that is an infection that affects the side of your face if too much air gets into your tooth, the only way to avoid that is to keep your mouth closed for as long as possible especially if you are outdoors

Well it hasnt been hurting anymore. So now im trying to figure out if i should just wait until after i have to baby. Yeah and i was kind of worried that it would get infected - but that hasnt happenned yet thank god. And i dont know if i would be able to handle that kind of pain. Would it be a bad idea to wait since its no longer hurting?

Chamoile syrup? Never heard of it..Yes i can get ambesol (or how ever you spell it) here. Im pretty sure it can be used while pregnant also. I have to be careful about chewing on the side where the tooth is broken though. Everytime i chew on that side it feels like the rest of the tooth is going to break off.

Glad its not hurting anymore! I would wait another while to see if the pain comes back. I dont know if you can get a gel called ambisol where you are? Its a babys teething gel, adults can use it too,and from what I can remember it is safe to use when pregnant, it numbs the gum around the sore tooth and gives relief for a while, or there is a chamomile syrup that you could get in any natural health food store. That does the same job and is very safe to use. I hope the pain stays away!!!

I've had lots of toothaches while I was pregnant. I have gone to the dentist when I was pregnant. The only medicine he suggested I take, at the time was tylenol. It seems like when you're pregnant, your teeth tend to cause you problems. I know mine sure did.

Yes it does seem like that. But i probably dont get enough calcium either because i hate milk. So then it is safe to take tylenol?

i am currently 8 months pregnant and let me tell you i know excatly what you are feeling tootache pain wise... it took me a while to ggo to the dentist and when i finally did they wouldnt help me out becaues i was pregnant.. my tooth needed to be pulled.. they wouldnt do it until i had a doctors note stating i was in my second trimetster and if it was ok or not.. i waited for what seemed like forever... ive always been a motrin ib profuin person the only thing that ever seemed to work for me and yet of course i couldnt take that for the pain so i did take tyenol if i felt it was too too bad that i needed depreatly to try soemthing.. i went through 2-3 tubes of oragel a week until finally it stopped working from using so much.. i tried ice packs and hot pads there wasnt a whole lot to do i practiaclly lived off of yougurt and oatmeal! LOL... However i went a few weeks ago to finally get it pulled and even then it was bad because they couldnt give me any pain relievers except tyenol for the pain and i was only allowed 1 novicaine injectin the dentist was nice and gave me 2 but once that wore off here it is 3 weeks later and i am still in pain.. if teyenol works for you use it... my docottor did say however she would give me pain pills IF i really felt it nesscessary and gave me the side effects harms to the babies... i figured i held out this long no sense in hurting the babies ( twins!) when i only have 3 weeks to go!
good luck to you hope all your pain goes away! take care and god bless

You can go to the dentist, just go & have them look at your tooth & see if they can recommend something for you - you already know you cant have certain things but they may be able to do something to relieve your pain - otherwise, you should just keep up with the pain relief until the baby is born but you have quite a wait yet.
Or ask your paediatrician & if he/she thinks it's ok for you to go to the dentist then go - just make sure they know you're pregnant (it wasn't noticable for me until about 6 months) & they'll know which precautions need to be taken.
Good Luck!

Well my dr. gave me a list of medications that i could take while being pregnant. And tylenol was on the list. I read somewhere that while pregnant the dentist couldnt give you anything for the pain, couldnt numb you. And the dr told me the same thing. But i havent asked a dentist yet. So i guess i will have to do that because the pain is pretty bad. And oragel does seem to help with some of the pain. Thanks for the information everyone.

I think the pain magnifies when your preggo but you can certainly see a dentist when your pregnant. I had teeth filled and everything. My babys were fine. And Tylenol as far as I know is absolutely safe in pregnancy because it is mild. Only problem is it doesnt take care of severe pain. This post is 4 months old so I'm sure you've had yr baby now. Congrats hope your tooth pain went away. What I had was gum pain:(

you can try a topical pain reliever.like Oragel or Anbesol.
but im curious, ive never heard anything about not being able to go to the dentist when you pregnant. where did you hear that? and what is the reason behind it?
perhaps you should call your dentist's office and ask if there really is a medical reason why a pregnant woman cannot see the dentist. sounds like an "old wives tale" type thing to me.
but the nurse or dentist himself should be able to give you a sure fire Yes or No on getting him to fix it for you.

oh, you should go to the dentist if it is bothering you terrible. Let the staff know that you are expecting and they probably won't do xrays, but they can do a visual exam and offer advice and maybe even fix the problem.
yes, many mothers have troubles with their mouth aching during pregnancy - the gingiva becomes inflamed and sensitive, which in turn can cause the teeth to ache. Do not neglect oral hygiene due to this discomfort.
your dentist and/or ob gyn will be able to discern if any anesthetic crosses the placenta, there are several varieities of "caine" if one is dangerous.... ie novacaine and lydocaine.

I actually had to go to the dentist when I was pregnant. I broke a tooth in half ended up with infections in my gums. I am surprised the doctor let you take Tylenol because I wasn't allowed that during my 3 pregnancies. But the dentist did fix my mouth. Only thing he couldn't do x-rays, didn't use any needles but topical freeze gel. I wasn't allowed any pain medicine afterward but I was allowed antibotic for the infection. For my kids they only use freeze for deep cavities, if the chip is mostly surface they don't use anything on them. If you are allowed pain relievers I shouldn't see a problem going to the dentist. Better to at least find out if they can help you. Congrats on you pregnancy! Take care Vicki
