Richard Jewell. If the name rings a bell, he's the security guard who saved a lot of people from dying in the Atlanta Olympic bombing a while back. Days later, the media portrayed him as an attention-hungry psycopath who planted the bomb and then alerted people to it so he can be proclaimed a hero. Turns out he was the real deal after all--a real hero. Bomber was another guy, a radical, who confessed to the crime. Jewell is now dead. Although he was able to sue some of the overzealous media companies and receive a cash settlement, the guy had to spend the rest of his life clearing his name. I'm all for freedom of the press. But sometimes, the media takes it too far and abuses the great power and influence that they have. Take that prosecutor turned newscaster, Nancy--what's her last name--for example. She drove a young mother to committ suicide after she accussed her of killing her own children without substantial proof on national tv. The case has never been resolved. Do you agree that sometimes the media acts irresponsibly and "convicts" innocent people in the public court of opinion?
