If you took Shorthand in school or college...

how did you use it after you learned it? I used it in every job I've held over the past 47 years. When I was in school, I used it to write down and learn the words to every new song on the radio. This really helped pick up my speed. When my school sent 3 of us to the state business contests, we used what we'd learned in our psychology class to help us do even better. As we sat around talking to students from other schools, we told them that we had to qualify to attend the state contests and had to be able to take shorthand at 150 wpm for 10 minutes, then correctly type it all. We really did believe that it helped us to come in first and second (I was second) in the state contests.

I am a senior in high school and I never have learned shorthand. My mom did tho in high school. she said it helped her take notes in college but now she doesn't even know how to use it.

My Aunt kept up with hers on jobs over the years and even used to write letters to me in shorthand. Her shorthand was as perfect as in the Gregg shorthand manual. Mine isn't...LOL.

Hi Claudia, I took shorthand in high school and then again in business college....my first real job was as a stenographer for Southern Pacific Railroad. Let me tell you, I used it EXTENSIVELY with that job. When firing an employee they would have the equivalent to a court hearing and stenographers(which would include me) would have to take all the testimony and transcribe it onto a ditto master so copies could be run on the mimeograph machine....ancient times I know...haha. Occasionally I still use shorthand to jot down notes, and even have one of my shorthand dictionaries from school.

I took a couple of courses in college, but I lost the knowledge since I didn't use it much; I am now contemplating on taking another online course soon in hopes of getting a better job later on. I feel it would help me and I can get up to speed for the job.(Court Reporter for the County at $39Kplus a year). you have to type 65 wpm(I type about 50 but I'm hopeful). Interesting that you brought this up. I have had the thought to do this and am contemplating it.
