What Is Your Unusual Camping Story?

Do any of you campers out there have a favorite story to tell? Just something out of the ordinary you experienced on a camping trip? Here's mine..... We were (my 2 Daughters, 1 Grandson, 6 Friends) were all camping at Jellystone Park In Aurora, Ohio. My daughters and myself all love skunks, and know they will not spray you if you don't threaten them. So, here we are, sitting around the campfire late at night, drinking, roasting marshmallows, telling scary stories and having a good time. Sure enough, one pretty good sized skunk comes walking right up to us, smelling around looking for grubs to eat, just minding his own business. We started to feed the little guy some peanuts, a marshmallow or two, and he just loved it. We took pictures of him and I swear he knew he was on camera, it was like he posed for them. I have one picture where he is only about 2 feet away from me where I was feeding him a marshmallow. Eventually, he left and went down the side of the hill we were on, back into the woods. We all laughed and thought it was so much fun. About a half hour later we were all getting ready to go to bed when we heard a noise in the woods behind us. Of course we went to invesigate and much to our surprise, there were about 20 more Skunks, playing in the stumps, chasing each other, having their own little campside rendevous. I swear he let the word out that we had food and called all the relatives in the neighborhood. We threw more food down into the woods so they could all enjoy, took more pictures, and eventually after talking about our episide, went to bed. That was a great fun experience for us, and no one was sprayed or threatened. They aren't as bad as people might think. It's when you run, make loud noises, or try to chase them away that they feel threatened. This is just one of a few stories I have about skunks, and if you know anything about animal totems, the Skunk is one of mine.

Back when I was a kid, I went to a school camp in the mountains. Beautiful scenery, quiet and remote. There were about 22 kids and 8 counselors in all. One day, the counselors decided we should all go on a lizard hunt. So there we all were, slowly walking along in this clearing looking for lizards. I was about middle of the line that we formed. From the end of the line to my right someone quietly shouted "lizard!" We all froze and looked to where the kid was pointing. I guess the lizard figured it was spotted and started to run. We gave chase, Keystone Cops style, for about 2 minutes before it disappeared. Disappointed, we began a new search. Not even a minute into it, someone once again said "lizard!" This time it was in a whisper. Everyone froze again and then another voice said to me "don't move!" Slowly a counselor approached the lizard and caught it. It was much easier this time considering the lizard had climbed up and rested itself on the top of my head!

It sounds like you had a wonderful time camping there in the mountains, it sure sounds like somewhere I'd like to go right now, lol!....I need a nice vacation. Keystone Cops made me laugh so hard, I could just picture this with everyone running around, haha. I think the little guy that rested on your head figured he wouldn't be noticed there......cute story and Thanks for sharing.

I was camping in a state park next to some young women who were afraid of skunks. They had put a skillet with grease near the back of their campsite and a young skunk was eating the grease. I told them to watch me as I went over slowly to the skunk and slowly got on my stomach and was face to face (within a foot of his/her face. I talked quietly to the skunk and then told the girls that I was going to get the skunk to move along. I then started talking louder to the skunk and began to get up. I took the skillet and told the skunk that it had to get out of there. It started to leave and I started to walk behind it. Then I started to walk faster toward it and it moved faster. I did not threaten it but it knew enough to leave. It did not for once do it's stamp the feet or raise it's tail.

Great, great story!..I'm glad to see someone else who understands they won't really hurt you at all. I think they're great little animals who just defend themselves when necessary. Too many people today are just in the killing mode, getting rid of what's in their way, when actually WE are the one's who are in THEIR territory and took over THEIR living space. Thanks for your response, very nice.
