whats the reason of having dog in your house?

a lot of American have dogs. i saw yesterday in the newspaper that an old women gave her 12 million to her dog. a question comes up to my mind, why they have dogs. so i want you guys to give my your idea of having a dog.

Most american's have dogs for company or companion or even a friend... but here in my country...most people have dogs so that someone will guard their house... dogs are very good at that... my mother actually have 2... and they guard her house very good.
