I think I will make some people angry with this but so what its a discussion. I love to watch contest in cooking and thats one thing thats on my mind Why are men better chefs then wimmen? In all contest that I hawe watch there are only 1 or 2 female chefs and 8 to 10 male and I hawe newer seen a female chef winn the contest. In resturants there are it the same most chefs are male and I wounder why. I hawe been working as a souce chef for many years and only one time I been working with a female chef and that was only for one year. So it is TRUE MALE ARE BETTER CHEFS THEN FEMALE.

Hah, safe answer Terry! ;p Don't worry about making enemies, everyone has their opinions and observations. We wont all see it the same way, yet this is a good topic. And its not like Matte said something crazy or hurtful, just his observations on the matter. That's fine to me.

It is a good point, but I don't know if it necessarily makes men better chefs or not. I watch Iron Chef, and Cat Cora is the only female chef. I am starting to see more female chefs on the show now however. Female chefs are excellent too, but maybe the men have more of what it takes to work in a stressful restaurant environment. I dunno. I'm no chef, that's for sure. I can cook, but my husband is a way better cook than me. He can cook for me all day if he wants too.:P

You're right about that. Male chefs do seem to be more daring and the females are much more practical. To stand out, you have to take risks from time to time.

I think its because men go to school to learn how to cook. I think women are brought up to cook so they don't want to go into the cooking profession. I think that is the reason more men are chefs and women are cooks.

Chef Bear - A cute little chef bear
Hi matte5, I honestly think that women are just as good as chef's as women. I think the reason that their may be more men chefs then women chefs is because men seem to cook as more of a hobby. In each household the women usually do the cooking, but I don't think they enjoy it as much or put as much effort into it because they have other things on the go such as cleaning, laundry, taking care of child/children, etc. If someone is in a hurry to get something done it isn't going to have as much effort put into it!

I know Chefs have to go to a school. Basically my point in a nut-shell was that I think men are better cooks then women because they do it more on a hobby basis not because they HAVE to.

Hello. In the household I dont say the person is a chef chef that is when you hawe it as profession and when you are working as one you cant think of laundery and cleaning. To become a chef you nead atleast 5-6 years in skol then you hawe the practice.

I guess women have the answer to your question. They often say that " the way to mans heart is through their stomach." So men knows what is good food and that is why they better cook that women.

Many people say that men are better then women , and viceversa . I think there is only 1 answer to this problem : men are good at half of all the things in the world , while women are good at the other halh of the things , hope you understand what i mean :)

I was discussing this same topic with a friend the other day. I have to agree, that overall men seem to make better chefs than women. I think it is because men are more mechanical minded.

I believe that women are more practical and have less flair when it comes to cooking, they were taught for the most part by their mothers/grandmothers, and feel almost honor bound to do it like that, while men had no such training, yes their mother/grandmother may have taught them to do the basics, it was not years of cooking meals for family's. When men enter the cooking trade they are not hindered by facts and ideas, so they can be as adventurous as all get out. I know that pumpkin taste great in a pie, but give a man a pumpkin and tell him to use it for food he may come up with a soup, a vegetable, a condiment, a stuffing, as well as several deserts. As a cook of many years I have met and worked with several chefs and they were all men, I frequently found my self astonished at their ability to go out of the box for a lack of better words.

I agree that men are better cooks than women as what I can see on TV also especially in programs such as Hell's Kitchen, Anthony Bourdain, The Iron Chef, etc. I don't have any idea why but I just know that most cooks particularly in high class restaurants are men rather than women. Maybe because men eat more than women? And because of that thought, I thought to myself that if men eat or consume more food than women, most likely they would like to eat more delicious, unique and satisfying meals. I think it is just in the genes of men to eat more food and also create more food mixes. Those men who are passionate about food will eventually study in a cooking school,etc.. and then they practice cooking, they become apprentices and eventually to being a chef. That's just my opinion though,. :)

I agree that men are better chefs than women, but women are better bakers then men. I would be happy to bake anything for a man that is willing to cook for me:) Honestly, I think that men take cooking more seriously than women.

i feel that men put alot more energy and emphasis into what they are making and are more stern to make sure the food is the way they want it,where us women love to cook and are very great cooks but we are not as stern as men,we do the cooking and when its done,we just serve it and eat it,we have aloty of other things to worry about.but there is alot of awesome women cooks, and i do feel we are just as good.

Hey you can say that and get away with it because you never came up against a real Jamaican woman who loves to cook. The next point is that most women like me though I love cooking have interests in other areas. So thats why you won. hahaha. Really you have not met our cooks here and most of the women we dont do it for a living even we are execeptionals in that area.

Well I could care less about men vs women in this respect. But I do see what you are saying Matte. Several shows about male cooks and rarely any about females or featuring females. I will say this though, I've seen situations where the females clean the guy cooks clock out outright.

But I was thinking about it, and how can men be overall better chefs if the woman always ends up cooking at home since the man can't cook as well. I am a better cook than my bf so I beg to differ on this one. No offense... :-)

Hi matte5!Yes, I have noticed this as well.My mother used to be a chef but only for a few years.Since she is in poor health conditions these days, she taught my father how to cook. After a short period of time, my father cooked better than my mother. Its just amazing since my mother had long time professional training before.

Hello Matte5, even I feel the same. The reason may be : usually most of the men will not take cooking as their profession. They just take it as a hobby. And if we take it as a hobby we do it with much interest. Like, suppose i learn music as a hobby, i will have much interest in my hobby than in my profession. So, I think what you have said is absolutely correct! Men do cook very well than women, but do it only occasionally!
