Do you think Kris Kringle is a good idea?

We call him Santa Claus, but what do you mean by doing a Kris Kringle?

A Kris Kringle is when you put the names of people in a "hat" and you draw out one name for each person to buy for.

It would definately save money and pressure of buying for everyone. It's too hard and expensive to get every person a gift. I think it's a great idea.

Not sure what this has to do with the discussion topic!

We've been doing this for a couple of years with my side of the family, it makes it so much easier as we were finding it really hard to buy everyone something they really wanted, particularly my parents as they have everything! We buy normally for all the kids and my hubbys side of the family though. I think it works out well as we all get the enjoyment of watching the kids open their presents, and get something small each.

If you put the names of the people into a hat, and buy for that one person only, it will save a lot of money and make it a lot easier for the person both giving and receiving gifts. If you are the buyer, you can put more thought, effort and money into the gift. If you are the receiver, it means that the above has occurred. Have fun chocolate lady.

That's very true. And I know for me, I'd rather get 1 gift that was well thought out than a bunch of things that I probably didn't want in the first place!

I think this is a wonderful idea and have participated in these in the past. However as a family we don't do it, simply because there are only the 3 of us. LOL We generally have Christmas with friends. His family have a Kris Kringle where early in the year everyone picks a name out of a hat, so to speak, where the men pick the name of another male and the females pick one of their female rellies. They then spend up to $80 on the person and they look at it as a sort of competition to see who can get the best value present for the money. Her family buy everyone a present, but the limit in this case is $5/person. Now that too is a challenge of a different sort. We are involved with both sides, although they do not get on with each other, so never have the day together. Lunch with one family and then the evening meal with the other. Sad, but true. Which is better? I have to admit that I prefer the first option, because instead of getting all these little presents you do get one decent gift. Do you know how hard it is to buy something for a teenage girl for $5, and it is not "tacky and junky". I generally do manage it, but only because I start shopping early in the new year. Good luck to you caramello because I think it is a wonderful idea and much better than everyone buying a small gift, which might not be wanted or needed.

A great idea caramello, and at least if you are the one who chooses who he buys for, you can use some discretion. Mums are wonderful people and if only the "children" knew what we do sometimes. LOL

There are only 5 of us, but I would like to try it this year as my son is not able to afford much as he is paying off a Mortgage, and I have noticed each year that he gets upset because he feels he has not given much, and that is not what it is about really. So he only has to buy for one, and as I am the one choosing who he buys for lol makes it a bit easier!

Our family does it and we set a price like $50 or whatever we all get a gift and we all get good gifts. Some families or work places call it Secret Santa only you know who you are buying for you just pick a name ,buy the gift ,write the name of the person that the gift is for and place under the tree . After everyone has opened their gifts you can then discuss who bought for who . It is cheap and fun no one misses out.

i think there's nothing with that. it's a good idea, even, especially, if that would keep families together at christmastime. i'm glad you thought of that.

A lot of families are going this way, personally I prefer buying everyone a pressie even if you have to buy cheaper, I think A good fun part of Christmas is opening lots of pressies and making a huge mess with all the wrappings....that is my memories of my Christmas.

I would prefer to open lots of pressies too lilaclady, as have done for many years, but circumstances have changed and when my son was sad last year and apologised for not being able to afford too much, that is when I decided to change, as to me that is not what it is about! Thank-you for your response.

We do that in my fiances family with the adults, each of us have our name put in a hat and it is drawn out and we have to spend a $50 minimum on that person, This year i am buying for my father inlaw to be and my fiance is actually buying for me lol!

We do this with my family each year. We have a $100 limit to be spent on the present. We also make up a wish list of what we would like to receive as our gift. This makes it easier on the person who has received you as the person to buy the present for and also you will get something that you actually want.
