Candle-making

I am a full-time mom and currently I want to help out in earning money for our daily expenses, especially now that we have a baby. I am thinking of putting up a candle-making business, since I am very fond of candles. Anybody here who knows how to make home-made candles?

Well candles are very popular, I had a go at making them years ago, need a bit of room if you were making a lot at once, it is just a matter of buying the wax oils for perfume and moulds, there are some good books around to teach you how, but i would assume you could get all the info from the internet as you can get information on just about anything...Good Luck....

Thanks lilaclady. Yes, I have started surfing the net for recipes, tips and other stuff about candles. My next step right now would be to know where to get these ingredients.

I used to buy mine just from a craft supply shop but I was just playing with it really if you were going to go into it big time better to go to some big wholesale place and maybe buy in bulk a bit and it would be cheaper in the long run...

Hi devious67, That's a good idea putting up your own business at home and candlemaking is a good choice, I think. Here's a site that can help you check it out. Candletech.com is a free community resource that offers candle making and soap making instructions, project ideas and information on moving beyond a hobby to start your own business. Goodluck!:-)

I think that is a very good idea and homemade soap is very good also. I suggest that you go somewhere, may be at the Department of Agriculture & Natural Resources or other government offices which distribute pamphlets and/or help people who desire to undertake this home or cottage industries. I hope that you succeed.

I just started making my own candles also. I worked in a candle store before for 3 years, so had a lot of insight on the do's and don'ts. I only make 8 oz. candles and tarts in cupcake papers. I purchase a lot of my items from sites that we purchased from as they do sell to the public for the same price as a store owner. The site I use most is Alabaster. They have terrific fragrances and a lot to choose from. I also use the j-50 wax from there. If you are not looking to make a killing from this, I purchased a Presto deep fryer from Ebay that had been converted to a wax melter. Works great as I don't do a lot. I have about 25 fragrances I use. I am set up at a flea market locally and hope to do better when the holidays roll around. CANDLES MAKE GREAT GIFTS.!! Would love to answer any questions you might have.
