Paranoid pagans?

A comment I made on another discussion reminded me of the fact that my great-grandmother was very big on placing protective spells on her home, and items she used, and pretty much everything. I've grown up to be the same way... every place where I've lived has been heavily cleansed, protected, etched with protective signs, etc. I wear necklaces that I've places protective or healing spells on when I'm expecting a bad day, or having health problems. My child has probably had more protective spells done for him than any ten children could possibly need... Am I the only one like this? Are there any other "paranoid pagans" here? Do you cast protective spells a lot, or put up certain signs or items to protect your home and loved ones?

I'm not a ritual type person myself...BUT that doesnt mean I dont "do my thing" when moving into a new home, someone is traveling, we're have a bad week etc etc...I DO thoroughly cleanse and clear my house when moving into a new place and then periodically during the yr *usually in the fall and spring I do the full blown thing*...I'm more of a chant-ie, candle-ie, mental kind of gal...I do have things up around my home though that are significant and have 'purpose' etc... sorry if that doesnt make any sense I'm not quite with it right now....I'm being rushed out the house damn it :-{

Catholics, Orthodox, and some other religions all do the same thing to their homes, no shame in it, if you feel that it will make you and your family feel safer, go for it.

*nods* I wasn't really saying I was ashamed of it, just poking a bit of fun at myself for going overboard sometimes. Thanks for your response! =)

I don't think I would call myself paranoid as I only protect against things that I know are there, if you get my drift. I don't use spells as a prevention of negativity but rather to keep unwanted intrusion at bay. However, having said that, there was an instance when I had to protect myself against a curse of fire, after almost burning my home down on the third attempt. I felt this might have been a case of the rule of three returning to me, rather than a very close friend, who had been a little bit naughty. Then, there were times when I've had visits from more friendly beings. I truly believe that one time I was visited by the Crone, when I first decided to change my path, and who seemed to be wrapping her cloak around me in protection. I have also experienced visits from spirits, but none of those have been threatening so I welcomed them with a rune inscribed candle, rather than prevent them from entering. I believed they would protect me, and never harm me. However, it's a dangerous game, because as a friend pointed out, who can tell how crafty the spirits will be just to gain initial access? :) So, a little while back, I did protect not only entrances to my home, including the chimney opening, where they used to knock three times, but the perimeter of my garden, and have had no problems or "visits" since. I wear a protective amulet against those who sent the curse, and because it's a bit sharp, it goes under my pillow at night, inside a pouch. So, there you go... you can't be too careful when you know it's out there, but I wouldn't go to the point of paranoia. Brightest Blessings.

That isn't paranoid. That is being protective. If there should be anyone who should be paranoid is a non pagan. Pagans have spells. They can harm someone if they really wanted to.That is why I know that no real witches were caught and tried by the paranoid Pilgrims.Anyway I think it is a great idea in this day and age to put protective spells on everything and everyone I hold dear.

You have some good points actually. The paranoia thing was really just me poking fun at myself. I suppose while "Pagans have spells" most of us also believe that even people who don't believe they can do so can send negative energy your way. Also, spells don't always work immediately like that, or otherwise bad things would never happen to Pagans, and bad things do. Not to mention that most modern pagans follow some form of code that keeps them from just randomly running around shooting spells at each other. For Wiccans there's the Rede, but even other Pagans have guidelines and would usually only actually try to harm someone in defense of themselves or others. Then again, there is no religion that doesn't have its bad eggs, or so I believe.

Bummer. See that is why I am not a Pagan,I would put out too many bad spells.I knew the new Pagans were nicer than I would be.But I like that you do put out the protective spells. If I were a owner of an airline, I would ask a Pagan to put out a protective spell on all the flights.Would that be against the rules? Would a Pagan do it?As you can see I need to learn a lot more. Thanks for putting up with me.

Dear Lecanis, Nothing wrong in placing protective spells on home, protective signs etc., Every religion adopt certain amount of protective spells. signs etc., Not only in my house, there are lot of houses you will find God picture is placed on the entrance door, or above the door. We used to place God photographs on the entrance of the house or we make a different sign which are considered to protective sign in our religion. This is not paranoid but it is a custom of every religion. These things we inherit from our ancestoral. This is good and not considered paranoid. For your information protective sign, spells really protect the house and the family living in the house.

*nods* I wasn't really saying that other people are paranoid for doing that, just sort of making fun of myself for the extent to which I do it. And I do very much believe that my protective spells work as well. Sorry if I gave you the impression that I was making fun of anyone but myself! =)

The first thing that me and the wife did when we moved into our house was to do a cleansing, and the second thing that we did was to set up some protection. Then we moved the altar and lodge equipment in. After all that, then we started moving in other stuff. By the time, we got the first cat in, it was almost feeling like home already.

Well you know I am not pagan but I wanted to share this interesting fact with you about how Christians are paranoid as well. The reason we say "God bless you" is it was once thought we sneezed because a demon was trying to get up our nose to enter our body. So by saying "God bless you" we are driving that demon away. Is that not funny. I just read your post and thought I would add this. Hope you don't mind.

Thanks for sharing, sunshinecup! You know, I've always thought the sneezing thing was funny. That is pretty paranoid, actually, now that you mention it. Of course, most religions and cultures were pretty superstitious about a lot of bodily functions before they had the scientific knowledge to understand them, so I guess it's not all that hard to believe. It's just funny that people still do it, and also that even people who aren't Christian say "bless you" when you sneeze, though usually not "God bless you".

What really do those spells do? Do u just do a barrage of incantations and it works? I wish there was proof of a trheat and then you would be able to illustrate that spell A or spell B worked on bad luck X and bad luck Y! Quite paranoid, I'd agree.

*nods* Well, for me it's not really a question of fear of bad luck. It's more a matter of keeping things out of my home that I don't want in it. Not exactly ghosts, I don't mind those as long as they're nice, but just anything or anyone with bad intentions. I do know that when I was young my great-grandmother's protection spells repelled an actual person who was coming to her house with intent to harm me. My own protection spells have also kept away people who intended to harm me, as well as negative energy and such. I suppose you have a point that it would be easier to make others understand if there were some kind of proof, but isn't that always the case with religion?

I think I pretty much am the same way sometimes. I don't do it all the time, but I do like to cleanse, and add little things to help protect things and everyone around the place at the time. I've found, that harmony usually comes easier and usually keeps everyone safe and sound and helps keep bad stuff from entering the home. Plus, it just feels better. I don't think it's paranoia, I think it's just a safe guard because you never really know what can happen.

I guess it's a way of life for you sweety and if the spells and talismans work then that's not being paranoid in my book, it's just dealing with life in your own way.

That's a very good point. I have seen definite proof that they work, so I guess I shouldn't knock it. =P I like the way you put this by the way! =)

I carry chalk in my purse, have a talismen I put in my duffel whenever I travel along with a few stones charged for certain protective esque things...I pray alot, I have a tiny bottle on a bracelet which has blessed water, and I've yet to replace a small container of salt which I carry with me also...PLUS I've placed a protective rune on my bed room door, as well as two charged "protection/spell sticks" on my windowsill...protective carvings facing outwards. But then, I've grown up facing trouble..mundane and not fairly often...so I think I have the right to be a paranoid pagan lol. As I like to say, "It's better to be over-prepared for nothing, than underprepared for everything."

*nods* I grew up facing trouble too, so I guess that's my reasoning as well. I think if my life had been more stable and less dangerous, I might have turned out very different. I like that quote!

I feel you are normal with your religion and a mother. You want to keep your family safe. Christians who pray tend to pray all day on and off some days. In my opinion it is like casting spells. My step mother casts spells for all of us and do cleansings for her homes. I feel she does not do to many. I guess we all need to feel our families are safe.

LOL, well gee thanks for telling me I'm paranoid lol. Nah j/k. I use to be really crazy with it but have since lightened up a little. I do go through ever new home I live in and do a cleansing. I also seal the windows and doors so that no negitive people or engery can cross. I don't like stress and so I do all I can to keep stress and those that like to cause drama out of my home. Granted some do slip by but for the most part it holds tight. Most protection spells I do are for my friends, they are a little nuts sometimes.

Don't feel too bad about it, I understand it completely. All sorts of religions and beliefs do TONS of stuff to purify, protect the house, ward spirits. It happens! It even happens for other things too (anti-bacterial sprays, disinfectants) so it should be too puzzling for people to get. In some form or another we've protected ourselves and our homes from invaders, literal, sub-literal (bacteria/viruses), and spiritual. Personally I only do certain purifications at a time. *Puts on White Mage/Priest Gear* I've done a good number of things. Praying, meditation, throwing purifying salt or salts along the doorway or other places, putting up a wind chime in a place I frequent (my den ^^). Of course I know I just looked crazy to some, but I just wanted to prove a point ;p

*giggles* Yup, that's an awful lot of healing experience! =P I've spent way too many hours playing FF Tactics... I'm just obsessed with that game for some reason. =p My best WoW priest only got to level 30 or so, because I don't have that much time to play. Actually, I tend to get characters to somewhere between 30 and 40 and then get bored with them, for that matter. I just don't have the dedication. =p

Not so much now because our lives are more grounded and balanced. However, during challenging times of upheaval in the past...most definitely.I'd use a variety of rituals... Wicca symbols, candles, burning sage and smudging, drumming...I have combined a variety of protective practices from a variety of cultures. They are a comforting way of making our lives feel safe, grounded and of course protected.

I like: Sound cleansing with a rattle Smoke cleansing with sweetgrass A circle of cornmeal around for protection a really useful one: If no ants in your home and you want to keep it that way, mint oil in a circle around the home. Protection is important and has been around for centuries, so it must be useful. Read many of the entries. Very interesting topic.

*nods* Those are all methods I have heard of before, except the one about ants. Thanks for sharing! I have done smudging before, I actually learned that from another member of my family, my great-grandfather who is Native American. =) I agree that protection has been around for centuries, and every religion and cultures seems to have their own methods of it. It's a very interesting topic, and I'm so glad I started this discussion because it's made me feel a lot more normal. =)
