The animation is almost always too much when people use it.
I use it for things like, showing a transport mechanism where moving parts on the screen are needed, or silly presentations where I'm just showing that I know how to use PowerPoint.
There are some comedians on YouTube that make fun of things people do wrong in PowerPoint. It's pretty true and good to watch before you make a presentation.

In my opinion, if the presentation is meant to be professional, there shoudl be VERY little animation. Once every couple slides. And NO sound at all, especially not the default sounds that come with powerpoint.
Just a slide transition animation every couple slides helps keep people interested. Don't have your text come in from odd angles and everything else.

When I do powerpoints, I usually use animation only every 2 or 3 slides. I find that it is more effective if you don't use it for every slide. Save it for the most important points of your presentation. That will help people remember those points.

Presentation which is simple and understandable easily by the audience is treated as best presentation. I agree animation improves attractiveness in presentation. But animation such as character flying from nowhere or loading as a wheel or something like that is irritating in between a presentation. I keep presentation very simple, the only animation I add at the front page and page transitions but in character I do not generally add. But in sometimes when you want to point out a particular thing or step you can add a small arrow (animated) indicating that point. So keep presentations short simple and attractive too for the audience, that's the best presentation.
