Well, here's another new one for me.

My husband and I took our children to the Fall Fair today. We stayed longer than planned because we decided to take in our first demolition derby. Unfortunately we didn't come prepared, got too cold and left after only an hour. Anyway, when we got home we checked our call display on our phone there were 8 calls from "Arizona" with a 480 area code, and 8 calls from "Yok" with the exact same area code and phone number. What the heck is that all about? I can't find 480 area code in the phone book for anywhere in the world! I wonder why these ridiculous calls always come while we're out and not home. Sixteen calls!!!! We have also received calls from 000-000-0000. Anybody seen that one? I tell you, I am glad I have call display. Half the time I am able to look at the name/number and yell out to the kids "Don't answer it!" because it's usually a sales person. Anyone got any ideas on these ones?

480 is an area code in Arizona. I don't know who was calling you but they sure sound persistent. I checked for the 000-000-0000 number and it seems you are not the only person getting these calls. The answers as to where they come from range from telemarketers or bill collectors who are spoofing the caller ID to hide themselves, to computer-generated phone calls that just record if anyone is home by whether someone picks up or not. I would report the 000-000-0000 number to your phone company and maybe the FTC. Let them find out or tell you who it is and make them stop.

According to my phone book, the area codes for Arizona are 520 and 602. Both names had identical phone numbers. I know about the computer generated phone calls to see if someone is home because there is no one on the other end when you answer the phone. I do remember answering a 000-000-0000 phone call and I think it was a sales person. I've also seen three digits only show up on the screen. Weird.

480 is a split-off from 602. The phone company is doing it everywhere, making up new codes and splitting up areas into two codes. I just don't answer any call that doesn't show up on caller ID. I get calls that just say "UTAH" or another area. I cannot figure out how they manage to get the caller ID to accept just UTAH.

I have had the 000 phone call before but never the 480 number. I wouldn't answer or return the call because it could somehow cause you to pay long distant charges.

A long time ago I heard of calls coming from the Bahamas or Barbados and if you answered the phone you would find yourself with charges on your phone bill. That was awhile ago and I don't know much about it. I haven't seen that happen on my phone bill though. I certainly wouldn't be returning those calls.

I got a call once or twice from 111-111-1111. very strange. was too afraid to pick that one up so I dont know who it was. I am thinking telemarketer.

When I lived with my parents, we got the 000.... number quite often. I was told the 480 area code was for the Caribbean islands, but I have no confirmation about that. The rest I'd blame it on telemarkters. Who cares it it wasn't them, I'm OK with blaming it ON them. : )

I don't know about the weird area codes, but usually "the zeroes" as we call them are bill collectors that mask their number so you might get curious and pick up the phone.

I have no reason for bill collectors to be calling me, unless they are scams.

Here in Massachusetts they re "overlapping" area code because there were not enough numbers left with the new things out there like cell phones, companies taking up large blocks of numbers. So the phone companies are letting new numbers go out with new area code so that if a person had a phone number with an old area code and then bought a cell phone or a computer that needed to have it's own line for a fax, that house would have two area code in it.

Funny I should be reading this right now... I just got a call that started, "Hello. Macy's, Bloomingdales, WalMart..." I hung up. I've gotten that one before, as well as open line noises on my answering machine. But I don't have call display so can't comment on the rest.
