I have one day to get rid of it so if anyone has any remedies that gets rid of a runny nose and slight cough please let me know. He would be most upset if he can't go to school especially since its his first day in Kindergarten and we have been looking forward to this day for a very long time. Thanks.

I may be wrong in this, but I will dare to say that if he still wants to go, you should let him. His first day of school is very special and a cold should not keep him out. Unless, he does not feel like going. But, on the other hand, a lot of kids do miss the first day of school. I know I remember being in class on the first day and the teacher would call roll and some kids were not there and I would wonder why and try to guess what they looked like from their name. So, whatever you choose to do, it wont be uncommon. I know that it takes three days for a cold to come on and I believe that I read that it is only contagious for three days also, but I am not 100% sure. I will look it up and get back to you.

Thanks Rozie (hugs)! I should of dealt with it as soon as he started getting a runny nose but with a hectic week with my husbands friends arriving, and then finding a place and then helping them move, its been full on. His nose is no longer dripping but he still has a slight cough. Fingers crossed the teacher allows him to attend school as he has been looking forward to this day for a very long time (so have I). We shall see what they say tommorrow - he will be catching the bus to school and i will be waiting for him when he gets there -its only a 5-7 minute walk and he wants to catch the bus. I will walk him into class and then talk with his teacher and see what she says. The last thing I want to do is to spread his cold - other parents would not be happy about that I'm sure!

I was trying to convince him to walk with me and he was like "but mom I want to ride the bus with all the other kids" and I was like "I think it would be best if we walked together" and he says "i want to be COOL like the other kids and take the bus mom" LOL so of course I gave in. My husband said I was being too overprotective and to give him some space so i said only if I could meet him at his school just to make sure he got there safely (since it is the first time on a school bus). I was then thinking about asking if I could ride the bus to see which route it takes just to be "ok" about it but not sure if the bus driver will allow me to but i'll ask anyways haha! talk about won't let go aye! I think I just need to know that it will be ok on the first day and then let him be ... I wonder if all mothers go through this with their childs first day at school!

I can appreciate what you are saying, but you are going to find that there are going to be times when he hast to go to school whether he has a cold or not. Kids give each other colds all the time. It is a normal part of growing up. It helps to build their immune system and there are going to be times when he will catch a cold from someone else. I am not telling you to do something that will harm another child, but this will prepare them all for life. We all have days when we have a cold or some other illness that would make us want to opt to stay home, but we know that we have to go to work to earn a living. When I was doing my internship as a medical assistant, I caught a cold somehow. Instead of staying home, I wore a surgical mask to protect my patients. However, I do think that it is a good idea to talk to the teacher and see what their policy is in that matter. It was so cute to read that you would meet him at school and allow him to take the bus. I am not yet a mother, so when I read things like that, they make me laugh. It is cute how we do things just to make our children feel happy safe and comfortable. I would want my child to walk with me, but then he would not be happy, because he would miss out on riding with the other children. That's cute.

Lol. The one who comes up with a cure for colds will not have to worry for his or his familys future ever again. Unfortunately all the remedies i know of is more for the comfort than for the symptoms. ie, when i have a sore throat of cold, i will make a cup of hot milk and honey. Its sounds disgusting and does not taste particullar nice. But it makes me feel better in my missery. Just noticed this discussion is 5 days old and you only had a day :) well, then you can try my advice some other time. Greetings my friend.

Yup have been giving him apple juice (one of his favourites) and orange juice. I should of delt with it as soon as the runny nose appeared. It has been a hectic week for us with my husbands friends arriving and then moving in the weekend. Fingers crossed he is ok to go to school tommorrow. Thanks Terry!

Oh sweety - if it is only a slight cold he should be able to go to school - espescially if he doesn't have a temperature! y advice would be to get as much vitamin C in him as possible - blackcurrant or orange juice, or maybe plenty of warm milk mixed with a bit of honey. I hope he enjoys school - have the tissues ready , it is a very emotional day! xxx

he was a little warm today but not to the point where it was a fever but i did give him something just in case. His nose is no longer running and the cough is still there, but it is only slight! He has been drinking a lot of apple juice which he prefers than orange juice. Finger crossed he still makes it. Thanks mummymo :):)
