Did you ever leave your groceries out somewhere and forget them?

Last night we bought a lot of groceries and took them upstairs to put away. There was milk and ice cream and vegetables and meat. However it was not until this morning that we realized we had forgotten 2 melons in the car. Our garage is not air conditioned and this is "Monsoon" season so the temperature was 116F (47C) and humid. When we opened the car it was easy to tell where we left this fruit. We just followed our noses! Have you ever left something in the car and it got spoiled or stinky? How long was it before you found out? Please share your stories!

I think I've left a doggy bag in the car a few times. The smell when you open your car the next morning is just very, very pleasant. I don't think I've left any groceries in the car that got spoiled or stinky. I always make sure to bring in the perishables first and put them in the freezer or refrigerator. A few days ago, Boyfriend showed me the Boca Burger and Lean Cuisine Frozen Dinner boxes that somehow fell off the grocery bag in his car. That was a shame, I like Boca Burgers.
I left something out of the freezer once. In order to get something I wanted from the freezer, I had to move Boyfriend's frozen chocolate lava cake box. Absentmindedly, I put it on top of the freezer and forgot about it. I didn't realize what I did until a few weeks later when Boyfriend, with a very accusatory look, showed me the box . I tried to act like I didn't know what he was pointing at but then I started giggling. And knowing me, Boyfriend was sure I was the culprit when I started the nervous giggles. That was a shame too. I love chocolate lava cakes.

This is not something we do frequently, but it seems that I have alreadymentioned once here on myLot the time hubby left a package of hot dogs in one of his tool kits which I discovered 5 years later when cleaning out the garage. Ewwwww. Better than the guy who used a slice of raw bacon as a bookmark in a volume he checked out from the library, though! Usually, we save the receipts and go back over them to make sure we brought everything up. If not, we trudge back on down to the garage and get them right away, especially if it is ice cream, lol.

Who in their right mind uses raw bacon as their bookmark? That is just gross and inconsiderate especially when they borrowed the book from someone else.

I had to post again to let you know that Boyfriend just came up and told me that we left the milk carton we bought a couple hours ago in the car. Ahaha. I brought in the Chinese food leftovers and I thought he carried the grocery bag in. He thought I did hence the milk still in the car. It's cold outside so I hope it's still good. But it's been a couple hours now.

Well, I figure since this discussion is so old I can just have my way with it, hehehe. I have never left any groceries in the car but once my sister and I came out of the store with our cart full and left it by the curb to go get the car. I don't remember why one of us did not stay with the groceries, but we hopped in the car and drove off. We got home and went to unload the groceries but they were not in the car!!! We had to drive back and get them... fortunately it wasn't too far away and they were still sitting right where we left them when we got back. We were both pretty hungover.

Well, I just love it when people revive my old discussions, because often somebody else sees that and comments too and pretty soon I have new friends. Wheee. You can have your way with any of my discussions any time. I thought you knew that.
As for the grocery stunt, cripers, we've done that when we were stone cold sober. Actually, this may seem boring to you, but we are always sober, that that is a different story, just as is the one about the time hubby drove my car to work and took the bus home and we both went back on the bus to pick up my car.

Since my wife buys them from BUY AND SAVE SHOP, sometimes there is some mistake in billing. Hence before uploading the materials to the car, she checks each and every item (we do ot have bar coding for all the products and hence it is typed manually on the billing machine). AFter checking, she knows what belongs to her and it is carried out of the store. Very rarely she leaves one or two items, which telephones the store and they handover the same next time on production of the bill.

My parents once left the groceries on top of the car when I was a child. They were driving through the parking lot and people kept honking and waving at them. They thought everyone had gone crazy. Then they realized what they had done. LOL, I have never left groceries, but I did leave my keys in the car lock and my ex-husband got in and put his key in the ignition, so we were driving around with my keys hanging out of the driver side door lol.

Something like that happened to my husband once. The man driving along side of us was shouting and trying to get our attention and my husband was starting to get mad about the interruption. He was about to make a rude gesture, lol, but I said, "No! calm down and hear what he has to say." It turned out there was something wrong with our tire. In a couple blocks we would have been up on the freeway going very fast and maybe gotten into an accident. Afterwards hubby thanked me for saving him from acting like an idiot. He really isn't that kind of guy. It must have been a full moon.
I am glad you found your keys, though. That must have been a funny sight, too.

Tell hubby he is not alone. I locked my keys in my running car once, had jumped out to fetch a newpaper from the machine. I was sick not only because of the hassle, but watching my beautiful oh-so-expensive gas being wasted while I waited for my spare key to be brought from home. Now I have a spare tied with a piece of wire to the inside of my back bumper on a bolt there. I tried one of those magnetic box thingies, it fell off almost immediately lol.

we've forgotten ice cream before - it melted and got all over the place. And once we left a peanut butter sandwich in a container in the car for a week, which resulted in a lot of mold.

It is hard to decide which would be worse, melted ice cream or rotted eggs! My, my, that must have made a mess. At least the peanut butter sandwich was in a container. Once my husband left a banana in his backpack just before we went on a month's vacation. When we got back there were fruit flies everywhere!

Once and only once I left a gallon of milk in the trunk for about 2 days. I normally only buy one gallon when I go, but this time I needed 2 or there was a sale, can't remember but I had a reason for getting two. Anyway out of habit when I got the one out along with my normal 5 bags of groceries, I forgot the other one. Thankfully it was closed so no odor, but I was plenty aggravated with myself.

This is not about groceries but spoiled food nevertheless. My parents were throwing a party. So early in the day my dad made some amazing jerk chicken. We were munching on it cooked everything else. We didn't have air conditioning and it was one of those humid summers. We left it in the oven so we could make room for other stuff on the counters and tables. Late in the evening as we were getting ready I smelt something foul!!! When I asked what that smell was I was informed that the chicken had spoiled. My dad looked like he had lost his best friend. He was so sad/frustrated.

OH, and btw, to help with the smell, put some fresh coffee grounds in a butter container in the trunk with no lid for a night or two. Coffee is a natural freshener. My sister left eggs in her car one hot day, they burst and the smell was just awful after a day or two (yep, the good old famous rotten egg smell). She tried this and in three days, no smell at all. Before she told me about it she had had the carpets cleaned and the car 'descented' to no avail. The coffee did the trick. She was just mad that she hadn't mentioned it to me before spending all that money for nothing.

Yes, I have done this too. I am horridly absentminded. So now, no matter what I make a special trip out to recheck the car after I have unloaded everything. Countless times I have found a loose item lurking there. I also try to use the receipt. As I unpack the groceries, I mark the item off the receipt, if anything is left unchecked it's been left in the car. My car seats have a habbit of eating stuff (lol), something will fall out of the bag and roll under them.

I was tending bar one night, the guy who was supposed to come in to take my place showed up 3 hours late so I missed supper. It was about 11:00 and I didn't feel like cooking so I stopped off at a fast food place to get a burger and fries. I was driving down the road and decided I wanted a couple bites of that burger before I got home so opened the sack and then the wrappings, all while I was driving. I took a bite of the burger and discovered something missing. There was bread, lettuce, pickles, mustard and mayo.... but no burger!
I didn't feel like driving all the way back to the place so when I got home I called them and told them that they forgot to put the burger on the bun. They offered me a free burger at my next visit. I got my free burger the next day for lunch on my way to work.
A couple of days later I got in my car to go to work and this slightly rotten smell hit me as soon as I opened the door. I did a quick look around the car and you'll never guess what I found... the missing burger! It had slipped out of the bun when I opened the wrapper and fell down the side of my seat. Ewwww, it was nasty.

Ewwww is a very good word to describe that! You remind me of the time my husband absent-mindedly left a pound of hot dogs in a metal tool box with some chisels and other seldom-used tools, which he then put away in the garage. I opened the box 5 years later and found them, with the expiration date still showing on the top of the package. How did I know it was him and not me? Because when he lost them, he told me and together we had looked all over the car and the house for that package of hot dogs and were unable to find it.

That is really funny! One time years ago, I guess I put a package of bacon in the cupboard with the can food. I couldn't believe I had done that. The next day I was looking for the bacon to make breakfast but I couldn't find it. I was sure I bought it so I moved everything in the fridge to find it. Then I moved everything in the freezer; knowing full well that if I had put it in the freezer it would of been on top but oh well, I moved everything anyway. By the second day when making breakfast I couldn't help but think of the bacon so I looked through the fridge and the freezer again. I even thought will maybe when I moved things around yesterday I moved the bacon with out noticing it. So I moved everything again to make sure the bacon was or was not there. No BACON! My sister came for dinner that night and I asked her if I had a can of tomato soup in my cupboard to go in the goulash I was making? Yes she said and can you tell me why you have a pound of bacon in here also?

I know it would be easy to forget the groceries in the car. But since I don't have a car, and usually I put everything on the table when I come home after grocery shopping, I haven't forgotten to put away anything or left something somewhere. Besides, I don't buy very many food everytime and therefore, I can remember clearly on what I have bought.

You are more organized than me, because once long ago when putting groceries away I put the orange juice in the cupboard and the laundry soap in the refrigerator. Then a few minutes later, I saw in my mind's eye what I had done and went back and put it right. I make many mistakes, but usually I correct them right away, and have a laugh afterwards.

I thought the melons would have gotten rotten overnight, but although they smelled up the car a little, they did not spoil after all. The funny thing was that when I reached into the glove compartment to look for an air freshener, the only one we had was Melon scented!
