Why do you often see a shoe lying on the side of the street?

How often do you see one shoe on the side of the road?
Whether it be on the freeway or in your local neighborhood
Sometimes it can be in a alley, what about just laying in someones front yard?Someone is always throwing one shoe away because they can't find the other one, and then having to throw away the other one after that.

I see an "Ooops, someone lost a shoe!" Thinking that they had them in a truck bed or tied to a gym bag or something and one had come loose or maybe they sat the pair on the roof of their car and got one but not the other and it flew off the car as they're going down the road. It could be any number of things. Even a trash truck going down the road and a shoe falls out.
