Jerry Lewis is anti-gay for a slip?

September 5, 2007 6:04am CST
Jerry Lewis dropped an anti-gay slur during the 18th hour of his annual Labour Day Telethon. He apologized yesterday for a "bad choice of words." The 81-year-old showman – onstage during the live telecast Monday – was goofing around and dodging his cameraman, then went into a ramble about imaginary family members. "Oh, your family has come to see you," he said, speaking to the camera and gesturing toward thin air. "You remember Bart, your older son," he said, and motioning again, "Jesse, the illiterate f-----. "No," Lewis said, stopping himself before continuing. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation called Lewis's use of the term "simply unacceptable." "I apologize to anyone who was offended," Lewis said in a statement. "Everyone who knows me understands that I hold no prejudices in this regard. In the family atmosphere of the telethon, I forget that not everyone knows me that well." Lewis's telethon raised $63.7 million (U.S.) for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, up $3 million from last year. http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/article/253229 -------------------------------------------------- I was just blown away when I heard about this, I love this man and could not beleive he said it. However I think he was just trying to be silly, not mean or disresptful. IMO you sometime have to take the remark and look at the source it comes from before judging it hateful, you know? Maybe I am wrong, what is your opinion? So what is your opinion on this remark he made, does it display he is anti gay or just old? Do you feel his was sincere in his apology? Should he be punished for his remark? Were you as shocked as I was to hear him say it? Thanks to all in advance.

He's said a lot more offensive things than that and it barely raised an eyebrow. Apparently you have to be Rosie, Will & Grace or Ellen DeGeneres to say things like that...

That's kind of my take too. If a person throws out the f@g word in jest, people shouldn't automatically assume it's in hate. If Elton John had said it, no one would have thought twice.

I agree completely with TeresaK...there is no way it should or could realistically be considered a "slip up"...and truth be told, considering his age I wouldnt be surprised at all if he were anti-gay really...he's old school..usually in that age group homosexuality ISNT accepted so I really think it IS a part of his regular vocabulary! and it'd be one thing MAYBE if it were in an adult comedy setting (meaning at a comedy show type bar)...BUT this is a FAMILY TELETHON that he's been doing for how many yrs now? I mean its not like this was his first yr doing it and he accidently forgot that he WASNT doin a stand up bar setting routine ya know.... Such a shame though...I used to be a fan of his movies back when I was a kid....really shattering to his image IMO

You nailed it! I couldn't put my finger on how I was feeling this morning when I read it. It shattered my image of him. I like you also think, he is old school, and no they don't take acceptance of homosexuality very well at all. Do you think they will replace him now over this?

will they replace him? NAW...he's the long time face of the telethon and I think to replace him wouldnt be well accepted really..Somehow it'll get candycoated as things like this usually do especially considering he is who he is (rather than some up and coming celebrity he's VERY estabilished in the biz and has been for decades)...

See, I just don't know. My brother has friends who call him f@ggot all the time just in play. It is very possible the Jerry Lewis has gay friends that he uses that word to and it could have just been because he was in play mode. The word, itself, generally makes me cringe even when a gay man says it. Like the N word makes me cringe even when a black person says it. To figure whether it was just playing, I would need to figure out his intentions. Since I'm not a mind reader, I just don't know. Isiah Washington said it in anger, so his intentions were not as difficult to understand.

Wow, you are right I think I take things offensive when I know it was said to hurt or to attack rather than to be funny.

Maybe he's old enough that his inhibitions were down so he revealed how he feels. Even illiterate is a slur if said in a hateful way We can't forget all that he has done of for entertainment and Muscular Dystrophy.

You are correct, he has done quite a bit for MD and has raise an awful lot of money that would not be there for these kids if not for him doing this telethon. That is very true.

No i was not shocked about what he said coz you just told me lmao. Hey this really cant piss me of at all. I love Jerry Lewis and went to see him few months back here in Denmark and he was as great as ever. I am impressed by this old man still going strong. He has given himself so much to this world and even raise good money to a good course. He is constantly in the spotlight and it is bound that something slips out without him actually thinking about it. Come on this happens to Bush all the time and pople just laugh at him, take no notice or as me shake my head in dispair, lol. The man even had the decency to come back and apologize for any offence caused, wether he ment it or not, to me is not important. How many public apologies do you believe anyway? They are given as the sinner is forced to do so to stay in their position of power. Good ole Jerry do not need this, he lived 2 lifes in the spotlight already. Wishing Jerry good health and all the best :)
