Give me your best ideas on housebreaking!!! This isn't my first time... I'm actually pretty good at this...its just that this smart, sweet little baby rat terrier has a phobia about 'going' outside!! The house is lined with blue pads... she goes right beside them! She'll be out for an hour with the other dogs... and wet on the floor 20 seconds after she comes inside! I've steam-cleaned twice THIS WEEK, I spray repellant everywhere, I use vinegar to clean up her 'whoopses', she has role-models (our other 2 dogs) who are doing their best to teach her, and she loves her people like crazy!! What can I try next... give me hope!!!

I have a rat terrier/chihuahua mix He still has a few problems but is getting better. My sister says to keep him int the kennel where he will learn if he pees or poops in it he'll have to stay in there with it. I can't bring myself to keep him in there. I put him in the bathroom when I leave, so he usually will go into the bathroom or kitchen to go which has the same type of tile floor makes for easier cleanup. My sis says with the kennel method it can take up to 6 months but it does work, I just can't do it to him.

An interesting thing happened... the day after I gave up and admitted defeat to the WHOLE WORLD, she decided that the paper was not so bad... and she also started going out with the big dogs and 'going' occasionally! She has the infrequent accident, but mostly after dark... I think that, since she IS a Rat Terrier, she just needed to win!!! To show who's boss around here!LOL! I couldn't use the kennel either... it was just too pitiful... and I want her to like being crated since she will have to be when she's in the van. Thanks for commenting... I think this topic scared people!LOL!

Those dogs aren't teaching her. Sorry... YOU need to teach her. If she goes 20 seconds after coming in the house, what are you doing? Are you disciplining her when you catch her in the act? Are you paying attention close enough so that you CAN discipline in the act, or seconds thereafter? You can't discipline a dog 20 minutes after they have screwed up, because it's too late. When she DOES go outside, are you praising her? You might think you are making a fool of yourself, but praise goes a lot farther than punishment. YOu need to make a big deal out of it when she goes outside, so that she knows what is right. If all she gets is punishment, she still doens't know what the right thing to do is, you have to show her that too. and don't expect other dogs to teach her. It's not like they can talk to her. She is looking for acceptance from YOU.

As I told seahorse above, she was just waiting for me to cave... we have gotten a new pup every 3 to 4 years because if we lost one, we would still have the other to help console us. Housebreaking has never been an issue, because I do all those things you mentioned. When I'm on mylot, she's on my lap. We take breaks about every 30 minutes, because I can't sit longer than that. She goes into the bathroom every time I go. I let all the dogs out every hour for 10 to 15 minutes. The only punishment around here is a flick on the nose for biting hard. I'm glad I'm finally seeing the positive results, even if she DID make me look like a fool!LOL! Thanks for your comment!
