My mother was a fabulous cook. Sadly, she passed away 5 years ago without having the opportunity to write down her wonderful recipes! I have only a few but mostly have to go by memory. Did your mother cook from a recipe or just make it up as she went along?

My mom cooked out of a box. Fortunately, I can still find her "recipes." LOL!!! mostly Hamburger Helper and Macaroni and Cheese. A few years ago, she did make a recipe book for each of her kids. The books included recipes that have been passed down through the family. I am so happy that I have recipes that my great-grandmother used. I also have my grandmother coveted chocolate angel food cake. I think having them is more important that actually using them. Although I plan on doing it someday. :)

When my niece had her first baby (at a very young age)her boyfriend's mom gave her a booklet of recipes everyone should know how to cook. Simple things like tater tot casserole and pigs in a blanket. Those are dishes that most moms already know how to do, but someone very young might not have the experience making. I thought it was a great idea!

My mother hasn't written down any of her recipes. My grandmother didn't either. I do have my greatgrandmother's cookbook from that is over 100 years old. It has some great recipes. I have been writing down my favorite recipes. I started with at recipe box that I gifted to each of my children that included many of my favorites. Now I am composing a cookbook of my favorites and will give this as a gift this upcoming Christmas.

Your children will love this!! Might I add, if you have time to include family pictures and stories. My mom included some little tidbits of things as she wrote our cookbook. Including "Grandma's Damn Waffles!!" (a story of how much she hated making waffles, but enjoyed making them because the grandkids loved them.) This book that my mom made for me is priceless, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Good luck!!

If she is still living you should ask her to do that for you! You have no idea how much you will miss her cooking when she is no longer able to do that for you! =)

My mom usually just makes things up as she goes along. My grandma did have recipes I believe. She passed away 2 years ago & I have no clue what happened to any of the recipes. There are things she made while I was growing up that I would love to have.

yes my mom does write down her recipes, but I get on here about them because she does not write them down with like a tsp. cup ect. She used the pinch of this and a tad of that. So it never comes out to taste the same!!!

Lol, my mom did the same thing if she ever did write anything down. I wonder if she did it on purpose just to be ornery.

Is she still living? If so, you should see if she will share some of her recipes with you.

My mother just made it up as she cooked. She didn't write down any recipes. I wish she had for some of the things she cooked because, I miss them from when I was a child. God Bless

I know just how you feel. Lucky for me, my brother and I have the same talent of being able to throw things together and make it taste good. He will occasionally call me and say "What did mom put in her potato salad(or whatever he is making)?" We figure she is in heaven laughing at us. =)

My mom literally had hundreds of cookbooks. When she passed away I went through them and copied down the ones she jotted notes next to.

Yes, she wrote down her own recipes and many that she found over the years. My cousin took them, her mom's recipes and other family recipes and put them all on a CD for each of us one Christmas. Great gift! My mom cooked from a recipe usually, but some things she just knew by heart. There were a few recipes of my mom's or my grandmother's that didn't make it to the CD, so I have kind of made my own recipes for those. Some turned out better than others, but they were all edible.

No she doesn't really use recipes. But she is an unbelievable cook. If I want one of them I have to kinda follow her around to watch what she does and write it down. I kinda took after her too, I just use recipes as a guide.
