Smoking / Drinking During Pregnancy

I just found out that I am 5 weeks pregnant, on Labor Day. Of course Labor Day weekend provides for quite a lot of partying! I became extremely ancy when I found out I was pregnant because I drank quite a lot during Labor Day Weekend, and I am a smoker. I have read articles that say, "A glass of wine once in a while is ok." And others that say, "NO ALCOHOL!" I have also gotten different answers to smoking. One website says quit immediately, while another says to wean slowly. What are your opinions?

I would quit immediately to be on the safe side and then go consulting doctors and professionals on their opinions about this matter. After all, you wouldn't want anything bad to happen to your children during pregnancy. I'm sure that a few sacrifices along the way will be a big difference in the long run.

Lady this is very simple Smoking really harm women's health even she is not pregnant so if she is pregnant than some care needed because it'll harm the unborn child and also premature birth fear is there. So please don't do it again.

Well, you are early into it that you do not have to worry much, but now that you are well aware that you are going to have a baby, NO SMOKING & NO DRINKING! One of my cousins smoked when she was pregnant, and it was the worst thing she ever did to her children because both of them have high anxiety disorders and none of them are able to live on their own. One of her children had a horrible cough after she was born from her mother smoking, and she grew up having trouble managing herself and her situations, she went to the hospital on many occasions for anxiety attacks and panic attacks. She is completely unstable. Going to school is the most difficult for her. My cousin nearly ruined her children's lives by smoking. To any woman who thinks they are going to have a healthy child if they drink and smoke: not only are you completely wrong, but you need to get yourself some psychiatric help as soon as possible.

First off - two congratulations. One for getting pregnant and the other for joining MyLot. Welcome. Well our babies were born before smoking and drinking and E numbers and so on and so on were oficially bad for you. So we both smoked and drank all the way through both pregnancies though my wife cut back a bit because she didn't feel like it so much. After they were born it was back to normal. The 'babies' are now 36 and 34 and while not being perfect like me (haha) they have turned out ok. So have a few cigs if it helps keep your nerves in trim and have a drink if you normally have a drink. But like everything in life, have them in moderation. I hope your pregnancy goes ok and you have a beautiful baby. The bad times with them is rough but the good times more than make up for it!

Congratulations first off. Having a baby is an awesome experience. Second the drinks you already had are water under the bridge,so dont beat yourself up over them. I do think you should really try to not drink or smoke while pregnant. You want to give your child the best possible start in life. Make sure to take your vitamins and try to eat a healthy diet. Your doctor can help you decide the best way to quit smoking for you and the baby.

You have to remember that whatever your putting into your body is what your baby is taking in also.

most of everyone already said what I think too (no alc no smoking as best as you can do) what I think is also important if you aren't able to quit smoking, try to not smoke in the house when your child is born. I know what it means to live in such a house and... well, I do know 3 people who got cancer before they were 20 years old (they did not smoke, their parents did) but i HOPE you know by yourself that it would be better if you do so if you want to give your child an halfway good health..

Oh yeah, and this is just something I've been doing, but as you get farther along, the baby can eventually smell what you smell. So I've been staying away from pool halls and other places filled with smoke, because, I don't know about you, but I don't want my baby being able to smell that.

first of all congratulations!!! And secondly, if you want to smoke, smoke! I smoked on all four of my kids, and they are perfectly healthy full term babies. I did try to quit on my 2nd but when I started bleeding and nearly lost her at 9 weeks I went back on them. You would do more harm than good to your baby if you try to quit altogether. Your baby can also get withdrawal symptoms too, so I would say try to cut down and enjoy your pregnancy...

Do NOT stress about what you have already done. I had drank before i found out i was pregnant and the doctor told me not to worry about it. He said obsessing over what i had already done would probably hurt the baby more then the drinking i did. And as for smoking i was also a smoker. I smoked up until i was about 2 months pregnant. I had been trying to quit for months but just couldnt do it. I know a lot of people who smoke their entire pregnancy and their children turned out just fine. I think the stress of you quittting all at once would be too much. Believe me i tried that and it didnt work. Just cut back gradually if you really want to quit. Good luck with what ever you decide to do and congrats!
