When you find something stinky do you hold your nose?

When you have to throw away something stinky like rotting fruit or a diaper, do you hold it at arms length, as far away from your nose as possible, as you desperately try to find the nearest trash can? Or, do you hold your nose so that the smell doesn't offend? That's what I do anyway. Strong odors make me feel very sick and I try to get them as far away from my nose as possible. Sometimes I wish my arms were longer! Today I was cleaning up our TV family room and found a wadded up piece of newspaper. I was kind of scared to look inside the ball of paper, but it was no problem smelling it. Something was definitely on it's way to rotten inside that paper. I was kind of afraid to look inside, for fear of what might be waiting. So, all the way to the kitchen, (with one hand firmly planted over my nose), I held the offending ball of paper, at arms length, afraid that the contents would leap out on me and then I'd be done for. Once I got it into the kitchen, I was brave enough to open the paper to find that it was only a stinky rotting peach pit. Apparently, someone (most likely my spouse) had eaten some fruit and then disposed of the pit inside newspaper and not bothered to throw it away. So, into the trash it went. So, do you do that? When you find something that is extremely stinky, and you have to throw it away, do you hold it as far away from you as possible so that you don't have to suffer with the smell?

I have a sensitive nose to some things so I end up putting it at arms length or I use a grappler to give myself a little more distance. I also try to wrap it up if I can, at least it gives me a chance to breathe. Gah, having such a sense of smell can be troublesome. I can even pick up on certain peoples musks within a few to several feet (most smell bad -_-). So you can imagine how I feel in some crowded areas or when someone forgot the deodorant.

Good thing you weren't in the grocery store with me two days ago. I almost threw up as a cashier walked by, so I can't imagine what would have happened to you. It's sad, that women's body odor was crippling.

Oh don't get me started on grocery lines. I've smelled many a foul things there. *shudder* some of which if I mentioned it would make the thread mature content. (Use your imagination -_-). Other people just don't wash up or are allergic to water, or they smell like they bathed in the toilet for a hour.

I used to do that, but now I just deal with it. I'm used to smelly diapers (I swear my child poops more than any other child I've ever met! No wonder he is so thin!!), and I rarely smell anything worse than them. Every once in a while I will find some small piece of rotten food that will make me feel really sick because of the smell, but usually if something is left out, the dogs eat it long before it goes bad. lol As far as peach pits and things like that, my husband would be in HUGE trouble for leaving something like that out, since we have a toddler that still puts a lot of things in his mouth! Probably the last time a smell made me sick was when one of my dogs killed a bird and ate part of it, and then brought the rest of it up on the porch. It somehow made it's way into the house, and smelled up our game room! It was terrible. I kept telling my husband that he needed to find whatever the source was, because I knew it wasn't just the trashcan in there!

I can totally picture that. When I lived with my parents and took my turn to clean the living room, I'd find a lot of gross things. Popsicle sticks covered in hair because they had fallen in the floor (my sister). Or worse, hankies my dad would have used, and then forgotten as they fell into the sides of the couch. I tell you, you know it's bad when you can't pull the sides of the hankie apart. What I do is hold it to where it isn't touching me, if it is a big item. But I don't hold my nose, I hold my breath. When I take my garbage out to the bin in the apartment parking lot, I hold my breath 5 seconds before I reach for the lid, during the process of dropping the trash in, and then 5 more seconds as I walk away. It is a system I dare not mess with. : )

i usually wrinkle my nose and hold my breath. sometimes i cover my nose too and still, hold my breath. ^__^;; and yeah, if i have to touch it to throw it away, i just hold it with 2 fingers and hold my breath, without holding it at arms length, i might bump it into something. ^__^;;

i hold my breath and try to get that offending odor out of the way as you did or use a spray or light a candle to get rid of the offending odor
