Grandparent's Day

Grandparent's Day is this Sunday, September 9th. Do you plan on doing anything to let your grandparents know they are special to you? If your grandparents are deceased, did you celebrate it in the past? I bought a musical card in Walmart today and sent it to them (they live 2 1/2 hours away). I'll probably call them too. I think it is nice to remember such special people who guided us, but also spoiled us. So did you or will you do anything to mark that day with them?

I believe it is on September 9th every year. It might just be an American thing, but I think everyone would benefit by thinking of their grandparents too. : )

Well at school they had Grand parent's day were the grandparents were invited to have lunch with the their grand children. Sadly neither of my girl’s grandmothers came. That's ok life happens, so I will be calling them on Sunday and letting the girls say something to them as well. I think my youngest has made cards for them, but we will be giving them those on Saturday at my great grand nieces birthday party, she will be one BTW.

oh we don't have a grandparents' day here in Italy. Guess it is a sort of injustice because we have father's day and mother's day so why not a grandparents' day, too!!! Apart from joking, I think it is important taking good care of our grandparents..they are the history of our lives..a history of love and sacrifices and everyday life from which we come from..I tried to spend as much time as possible with them when they were alive and I still have a special place in my heart for each of them..I have wonderful memories of the time we spent together and I thank them for all the love they gave me and my parents

Honestly hun here in Canada their is no such thing as Grandparents Day. I have noticed that Americans have more holidays then we do for some reason! It is however my hubby's birthday so we will be celebrating that. It does sound like a neat idea though as their is a Father's Day and Mother's Day. Maybe I'll send them an ecard to throw them for a loop lol.

I think they will, but I wish I knew how to cheer up my grandma in a really impactful way. She takes of my grandpa so much, that her spirit has really deflated.

Yeah, I didn't think it was unniversal, but thought maybe someone might be inspired to do something for their grandparents on that day. It's not a widely known holiday, and there is no attention drawn to it, it's just something you notice if you have a calendar that happens to list it.

That is what I thought as I haven't seen it on many calendars, thanks for clearing that up for me. That's sweet that you sent your Grandparents a card, I'm sure they will really appreciate it!

I'm visiting my grandmother this friday actually. I've packed a homemade lunch and we are gonna have a picnic together. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. I also got her a new message board clock. Its pretty cool. For my other grandparents (deceased) I'm gonna direct a little more thoughts to them this weekend and sunday. But it seems I think of them every now and then all the time, so this may not be very different.

That sounds absolutely lovely! I think you must be like me, because I like to check in on my grandparents every so often. I don't ever want them to feel they are forgotten. It saddens me how the elderly are kept so quiet and away from the welcoming circle of society. I hope you have a wonderful picnic, and that the weather cooperates. We're getting rain here on Saturday, so maybe that means you guys take the sunshine. : )

I've delayed the picnic a bit due to illness. Its described in part of my friday thread. I'm gonna do it over the weekend, but I don't want to strain myself over illness.

Is there a Grandfather's Day? I did not know that. My father-in-law has just passed away last month, and my son has just born last week. So they did not meet each other, but I want to do something to remember my father-in-law who has become grandfather of my son.

That is a good thought. I don't think a lot of people know about grandparent's day.

We don't celebrate Grandparents day in Australia. Sometimes, primary schools have a special grandparents day, where they can visit their grandchildren & see what work they are doing. I don't think this is related to Grandparents Day. It's a nice idea.

Since I was born so late to the family, I only got to know my paternal grandmother, but she passed away when I was in the 3rd grade. So I've never gotten to celebrate Grandparent's Day. So to all the grandparents here (and to yours too hon) Happy Early Grandparent's Day! I hope it is awesome for all of you!

Are your parents still living? I mean, do your children have living grandparents?

Hi AmbiePam. I will be getting a card out today and will also be calling my grandmother on Sunday. She is the only grandparent I have left and has some health issues. I just hope she will be around for at least a few more years. I'm not sure what I'll do once she's gone.

Hi there. Ive never heard of "Grandparents Day" I think its a wonderful idea though, as our grandparents dont last for too long... Although we dont have an official grandparents day, we do have family dinners, where the whole family comes, and our grand parents are always there, so we get to spend time with them then and as we choose too...

That is a wonderful option to have, because as you said, they aren't here too long.

We don't have this holiday here. But I think it is nice to have it one day in my country. We have the Elders' Day only.

Hi AmbiePam, That's a nice thought. I'm a grandparent myself now, but my grandchildren are very young. We have never really done anything to mark the day. I think it's a great idea to do something special, and give the day a higher profile. Blessings.

When my grandmother was alive, we always celebrated. We bought her gifts and card...and took her out to dinner.
