How do you fix the springs in a bed, so that they don't sag?

One of my beds has a bad box-spring and is uncomfortable to sleep on. I think the springs may be broken or perhaps a few springs are missing. I'm wondering if it's possible to lodge something up under the box spring where some of the springs are missing. and, maybe that will fix the problem. I haven't tried this out yet. So, I don't know if it would work.
Does anyone have any ideas for how to fix the springs in a box-spring so that a mattress doesn't sag? Is there a way to replace a spring in a box-spring so that it is still usable? Would appreciate suggestions.

I too have a cot IKEA. I have put a medium size 6 mm plywood on the sping and then mattresses are placed. I feel quite comfortable with this arrangement. And I get less cushioning effect but that is ok. If you want to get more cushioning effect put double mattresses.
