My autoharp is on it's way and hopefully I'll be learning it shortly. Anyone have any tips for someone just starting out?

Yeah! You got your autoharp!First , do you have a music store near you? You should go and see if they have any books on autoharp,I was lucky my autoharp came with a book that help me.Second, can you play the guitar? If so, the autoharp will be easy to pick up. If not, this may seem a little silly but practice strumming an air guitar. This way you will be used to strumming until the autoharp comes. When I learned I had been playing the violin for a few years so I don't know how long it will take to learn if this is your first instrument.Take your time you will get it.And the most important thing is to practice, practice, practice.make a schedule and do it daily. that way you will get better faster.Hey I found the book! It is called The Many Ways to Play the Autoharp by Oscar Schmidt-International,Inc.It is an older book so there may be another newer version. Happy Hunting.

I have a music store near me, but they didn't have any autoharp books. However, I looked at the samples of ones on MelBay.com and picked one out and have it on order. I can play the guitar. I play classical so I'm not used to a lot of strumming, but I did play some flamenco for awhile so I'm not horrible at strumming an instrument. This definitely isn't my first instrument at least. Which is good, I could no longer even imagine how hard it would be to learn something for the first time. I play piano, viola, violin, guitar, harmonica, and a bunch of other instruments (although, the ones listed above are the ones I can actually play really well). I will look into that Oscar Schmidt book. I did end up buying an Oscar Schmidt autoharp. :) A brand new one since I got frustrated with all the problems with the used ones I had found and didn't end up liking any of them.

Since you are getting a new autoharp it may come with the book.I play violin, autoharp and guitar. I did try the cello but I am a treble clef girl.

It's odd because for me treble clef is my hardest clef. I tried learning treble clef first on the song flute (slightly different from the recorder). I wasn't good at it at all. I learned bass clef for trombone easily. And then alto clef for viola also came easily. But I still get mixed up on treble clef! Which is odd because now most instruments I play are on treble clef. I can look at the notes and play them on the instrument, but I can't name the letters easily (which really messes me up for switching octaves without actually rewriting the music).
