Memories of my Great-Aunt Dot

Memories of my Great-Aunt Dot came to me yesterday. I remember her beautiful white hair that looked as soft as cotton. The Aunt Dot I remember lived alone in two bedroom apartment. I recall a cuckoo clock on her living room wall. It was such a fond memory that later in my life I bought a cheap version of it to hang on my living room wall.
I don't remember going to her house in the colder months, but do recall several visits in the summertime. Her windows were closed and the shades and curtains were always drawn on the sunny side of the house. The windows on the shady side were left open a bit to let the cooler air in.
She had an old gas heater in the living room. On the gas heater sat a whistling tea kettle that she kept there to keep her water warm for tea. I remember my Grandma talking about how she never had a good hot cup of tea when she visited Aunt Dot.
Aunt Dot was quite a character. Many times I would hear comments about her from my family members. Aunt Dot was a hypochondriac. She would feign illness, have a limp, inability to walk faster than a snail's pace, have severe pain in her back, or fake a near fall. When she got out of site of her audience she would pick up the pace and walk normal.
She was quite the artist. She did lovely embroidery. She embroidered pillow cases quite often. I remember some of her work that included covers for toss pillows that we had on our sofa. She painted on the fungus of trees and they were beautiful. Those really impressed me and made me want to do some painting too. I never did paint, but I did do some embroidery.
These are the memories from my youth. Unfortunately I have no other memories of her from later in my life.
I still recall with great fondness the fake limp in her step, the cuckoo on the wall and the love in her heart.

The memories we have of our loved ones live on and warm our hearts each time we take that memory out and think about it or share it with others.

It's weird how old people and relatives that we have some good memories from them are coming back once a while to remind us good memories and happy times. I often have memories of my two grandfathers.

The memories come in a flash, when we least expect it to happen.

Ah, that was sweet, it made me wish I had an Aunt Dot as well.
I had an aunt once that had Alzheimer's and as a child that was scary to be around. She would see us kids and stretch out her arms for us to come to her as if to hug us, but when we got near she would pinch the fire out of us. She passed away when I was about 7 years old, but I can still remember her. It’s sad though cause to hear the older family members talk, she was the sweetest person you could have met before the illness. She did have much money, but she would bring strangers in off the street and feed them. She once took her own bed sheets and made a dress for my mother when my grand parents refused to buy her new clothes after she out grown them. I now regret not having the chance to have met her before Alzheimer's and I am sure my memory of her would have been so different.

My Grammy had Alzheimers. It changed her. But, there were times when she was her old self. She was a treasure.

Your great-aunt Dot sounds like she was quite the character, Elusive. I think it's nice to be able to look back and remember some of our dear ones who are long gone. I do this often because it is our link to the past. Often I think some older people have a need for some attention, and maybe a feigned illness or physical defect might be the only way they think they can achieve their goal.

We all have a family member who wants us to think they are ill. You are right, it is for attention.

I always find myself projecting myself into the past just to see my lost loved ones again. Other times I imagine them nearby. I also take quiet nights to really think about things like this.
As always Elusive, thanks for sharing. I think I'm gonna go think about some of my lost loved ones under the night sky.

The moments we spend thinking about our loved ones that have passed on brings us closer to them with the great memories we have stored in our hearts.

its strange how we go back in time and remember the things from our past, I remember a few years ago taking my mum and dad back to the house we lived in for many years when I was little, it seemed so small when we went back, when I was a little girl I thought it was a rather large house, and even the street that I played in looked small, I thought I lived in a big street, and the people living there now had knocked out walls to moderise the house it looked really nice, I remember my mum and dad saying how they paid 5000 pounds for that house, today if it was sold because of the street it is in it would go for around $500,000....and it is in the best position near the shops close to town, I wish I could afford to buy it back....

When she came to mind I thought about her for quite a while. I wanted to remember more, but unfortunately so little came to mind.
